What is the Moving Painting?
The Moving Painting is a piece of artwork that has been featured in every mainline title of the Animal Crossing series. In New Horizons, the player must be careful when buying the painting as there are both genuine and forged versions. The fake version is not difficult to identify as the painting will lack the trees in the upper right corner. The artwork can be bought for 4,980 Bells and sold for 1,245 Bells—assuming it is authentic. When donated to the Museum, the player can examine the painting’s placard and find the following description:
“A painting of the Roman goddess Venus riding a scallop shell after being born in the ocean. The name Botticelli is said to actually be a nickname given to the artist’s brother, who was built like a barrel. Why this nickname was transferred between siblings is a mystery lost to the ages.”
The Moving Painting is based on Italian artist Sandro Botticelli’s acclaimed work, The Birth of Venus. While the exact date of its creation is unknown, it is generally believed Botticelli painted it in the mid-to-late 15th century, roughly in the 1480s. The artwork depicts the emergence of Venus on the shores of Paphos in Cyprus. She is attended to by the god and West wind persona Zephyrus and what is generally believed to be the nymph, Aura. They propel Venus to shore, where a female figure (possibly one of the Horae or Flora) awaits her. The piece is an example of Botticelli’s clever use of tempera on canvas, and Venus’ figure evokes classical sculpture.
How to Get the Moving Painting
There are a few methods one can use to acquire the Moving Painting. The most common way is awaiting Redd to appear in his black market boat, the Treasure Trawler. The vessel will be moored at the secluded beach at the northernmost tip of the player’s island. Inside, Redd will be selling an assortment of art pieces and other miscellaneous merchandise. Redd’s camper on Harv’s Island provides another opportunity to garner the item. It is random whether the Moving Painting will be one of the choices available for purchase. Note that while Redd will attend events like the Fireworks Show, artwork cannot be bought from him during that time.
If Redd hasn’t appeared yet, you may need to donate more items to the Museum and trigger Blathers’ request to expand it. Eventually, Redd will make a series of visits to the island that will result in him appearing at least bi-weekly. The player can only buy one piece of art from Redd at a time. Some players use multiple Switch profiles to purchase more artwork in one visit. Once the Moving Painting has been donated, the player can visit the Museum and admire it in its designated section. Sometimes the villagers on the island can also be found meandering the art gallery and gazing at the assortment of works you have assembled.
