Olaf is one of the numerous villagers players can meet in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The Animal Crossing series is well-known for its large cast of wacky and delightful characters. These characters, known as villagers, are some of the most important NPCs in the game. Animal Crossing’s addictive gameplay loop includes befriending these villagers, helping them with tasks, and forming a cohesive community. Here is all you need to know about one such character, Olaf.
Who is Olaf?
Olaf is an orange anteater villager first introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the Nintendo 3DS. He is the only anteater in the series to have a smug personality. Like other smug villagers, he tends to be flirtatious in conversation and will seem arrogant. Anteaters are fairly unique as they do not have visible mouths in-game and instead speak by moving the ends of their noses up and down, similar to Tom Nook. Olaf also stands out in that anteaters are lopsided in gender representation: there are only 3 males and 7 females across the series. Olaf’s birthday is on May 19, making him a Taurus. He shares his birthday with a popular rabbit villager, Sasha.
Visually, Olaf is one of the more interesting anteaters. Strands of wavy, brown hair cascade on his head while his raised eyebrows give him a bold look. He is initially adorned with a black suit of lights, giving him a matador-esque look. Some have humorously pointed out that he resembles famous singer Michael Jackson. The meaning behind his name is speculative but may come from the word olfactory. This explanation passes the sniff test due to his anteater status. In the Japanese version of the game, Olaf’s name is Antonio. The name change stemmed from a different male anteater named Antonio (originally named Makoto in Japan) already existing.
How to Get Olaf
If you would like to invite the dapper Olaf to your island, there are different paths you can take to find him, assuming you have an open spot on the island. Olaf can stake out at your campsite as a visitor, though this is chosen randomly. It is unlikely he will appear given the large roster of villagers from which the game can select. An alternative way to get him to the campsite is via his Amiibo card. Inside the Resident Services building is a Nook Stop kiosk that can be used to scan Amiibo cards or figures and invite villagers to the campsite. This method will require multiple days of effort as he will not immediately join your island.
Olaf can be sought in other ways. You can try to scout him on a Mystery Island tour, which requires Nook Miles Tickets and traveling via the airport. While he could be found on one of these tours, his appearance will be random in much the same way as the campsite. The player will likely eat through a lot of Tickets and time before they finally catch a glimpse of the suave orange anteater. Perhaps a quicker option would be to explore one of the many fan communities for the game and see if anyone is willing to part with him. You may have to break out a muleta, as haggling over the gallant anteater could turn into a bullfight.
Should You Get Olaf? Who Nose
Olaf is a middle-of-the-road character in terms of popularity. Anteaters in general are not the most notable species in the game. Other villager types like wolves and cats are far more popular in comparison. However, he is probably the most ostentatious of his kind, which may be a plus to some and a hindrance to others. Some are drawn to the more daring character designs while others like to keep it simple. The smug anteater could be a fun addition to your island, but you may have to put your nose to the ground to unearth him.
