Very few Sonic villains take the ‘dark opposite’ trope as literally as Scourge the Hedgehog. This evil copy of Sonic originates from Moebius, a universe parallel to Sonic’s home world. Scourge is constantly out to prove that he’s better than his positive universe counterpart. After years of wallowing in obscurity, Scourge made his frightening return with new powers and a green makeover. You can just read on to find out about the rest of his adventures in the comics.
The ‘Anti-Sonic Phase’
‘Scourge’ is this Rowdy hedgehog’s most notable name, but in 1994, he went under a different name; Anti-Sonic. Anti-Sonic is from Moebius, a complete morality flip of the normal Mobius that Sonic hails from. What sets Anti-Sonic apart from his good-natured self is his leather jacket, his black boots, and his vintage shades. Anti-Sonic was a recurring villain for a time, but he vanished after issue 112. The issue featured Anti-Sonic being apprehended by the ‘zone cops’, who help defend Sonic’s multiverse. The character went underground afterwards, before making an unexpected return in the early 200s.
Years after his last appearance, the evil Sonic counterpart reappeared in Archie Comics. Partnering with Rouge, the two conspire to take the master emerald for themselves. They are interrupted by Knuckles‘ father, an echidna warrior named Locke. During the altercation, Anti-Sonic uses the power of the master emerald, forcibly mutating himself. As a result, he turns green, which, alongside Locke’s claw mark on his chest, creates his iconic ‘Scourge’ design.
Green With Power
Since those events, Scourge the Hedgehog has become Sonic’s regular enemy. Scourge arrived to help Sonic fight off the ‘Croctobot’, an invention Robotnik created on Sonic’s birthday. Although he helped fight Eggman’s invention, Scourge attacked Sonic and started a brawl. Despite the added power from his chaos mutation, Scourge was soundly beaten back by Sonic with Shadow‘s help. As a result of the fight, the two had to retreat.
Scourge would continue to harass and attack Sonic in others. He worked as Dr. Finitevus’ right-hand man and joined the evil Destructix gang. In addition, Scourge joined forces with Fiona the Fox, Sonic’s then-love interest, who returned to being evil. Scourge was content to harass his positive self, and cause him pain. Despite all of their encounters, Scourge always lost. His greatest loss came after donning his purple ‘Super Scourge’ form, unaware of the energy drain behind it. Scourge was eventually turned over to the Zone Police, and sent to Zone Jail.
Scourge’s Attitude Problem
Scourge the Hedgehog’s personality embodies a desperate desire to define himself as separate from Sonic. Everything that he’s done, from the emerald mutation to his later omnicidal tendencies further enforces it. Scourge wants to be more than just ‘Evil Sonic’, and yet, he never will be. Scourge even attempts to turn this back on Sonic, believing that one bad day is all it would take for Sonic to snap. Sonic retorts that all it would take is a little kindness and selflessness to make Scourge just like him.
Scourge is a bully, which is best showcased in Issue 192, where he encounters Sonic’s robot father, Jules. Scourge attempts to attack Sonic in his sleep, and he is confronted by the positive universe version of his own father. Jules easily wades through Scourge’s threats and forces the evil Sonic to run away crying. Scourge the Hedgehog is someone who constantly pushes people around, but will easily fold when the situation gets out of his control.
One of Sonic’s (sadly limited) rivals
Scourge the Hedgehog is an interesting parallel to Sonic that not many other rivals can offer. He is Sonic’s actual evil counterpart, but he ultimately feels limited by being just a version of the ‘blue blur’. He wants to make himself more than that, and because of that, he can come off as insecure. Petty and self-obsessed, there are no lows when hurting Sonic that Scourge won’t willingly stoop to.
Scourge sadly is in a limited legal position, and because of this, he was phased out of the comics due to the Archie reboot. It is unlikely that he will make a return in a Sonic comic. However, the IDW comics introduced a similar green copycat to Sonic named Surge. This thunderous tenrec could, in some ways, be seen as a spiritual successor to the king of moebius.
