All About 2025’s Exhilarating Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana

Last year, Japan got a Nintendo Switch remake of The Oath in Felghana, called Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana. Earlier this year, this remake was brought to both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Now, with Ys X: Nordics’ release later this month, Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is getting an English localization that will be released in early 2025. Let’s take a look at what we know about this remade classic.

A Classic Remade

This isn’t the first time that Ys 3 has gotten a remake. The original version of Ys 3, called Wanderers From Ys, was released in Japan in 1989 for the PC-88. Wanderers From Ys was a departure from the way Ys 1 and Ys 2 played. Rather than being top-down, Wanderers From Ys was a sidescrolling game with platforming elements similar to Zelda 2: The Adventure of LinkIt also removed the iconic “bump” combat featured in the first two Ys titles, introducing a dedicated attack button to the series.

In 2005, a Windows remake of Wanderers From Ys was released, called The Oath in Felghana. This remake used the same engine as 2003’s The Ark of Napishtim, often called the Napishtim engine or the Ark engine. It still featured platforming like the original but removed the sidescrolling camera in favor of the top-down perspective seen in games made in the Napishtim engine. A January 2020 update to the game added voice acting to some of the game’s scenes, including a voice for the game’s narration.

What’s in This Version?

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is a remaster of The Oath in Felghana for modern consoles. Like many such remakes, it features updated character art with the option to see the original art from The Oath in Felghana. The same is true of the soundtrack, allowing players to either listen to the PC-8801, X68000, or Windows version of the music. This remake also adds the PlayStation Portable-exclusive features that aren’t present in the Windows release, such as Double Boost.

Ys Memoire also features additional voice acting for scenes, including lines for Adol himself. With Monstrum Nox featuring a scene where Adol has spoken lines, is it possible that developer Nihon Falcom is testing the waters for the series’ protagonist to no longer be silent?

Preorders

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana can be preordered for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. In the US it’s available from Amazon, Xseed’s store, Best Buy, and Game Stop, and in Canada it’s available from Amazon and Game Stop. Preordered copies come with a set of postcards, acrylic keychains, a diorama, the soundtrack on a CD, and a screen microfiber cloth. The game is listed at $59.99 in the US, and $79.99 in Canada.

Release Date

Initially, the game was expected to come out in March or May, the later spring months, in 2025. However, the developers are treating gamers to a pleasant surprise. The game will come out much earlier on January 7, 2025. With Ys X: Nordics out now, the Ys series is doing quite well.

Final Thoughts

The Oath in Felghana is a well-loved title among fans of the Ys series, between its soundtrack and its fun gameplay. It’s also often regarded as one of the hardest games in the series, second only to Ys Origin, when played on the games’ respective highest difficulty settings. While Ys Memoire will only be available on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, it’s entirely possible for the changes and additions to find their way to the PC version of the game. The PC version is available on both Steam and GOG.
