Wrestling fans were ecstatic when WWE 2K24, the latest entry in the 2K series, was released. Gracing the cover for this installment is the dashing Cody Rhodes, the current Undisputed WWE Champion. The game has received widespread acclaim and features the largest roster of a WWE game to date. Dazzling graphics and gameplay tweaks set it apart from previous offerings. The gameplay feels smoother and being able to throw weapons is a hilarious benefit. 2K24 also contains numerous game modes to explore, giving the title depth and extensive replay value. MyFaction
MyFaction debuted in WWE 2K22 but has become a focal point in 2K24. In this mode, players collect cards featuring wrestlers like Rhea Ripley and Rey Mysterio to build stables. The cards have various rankings and stats, with highly sought-after cards boosting the strength of your faction considerably. This mode contains single-player features and ranked online play, allowing for a PvP environment. You can purchase cards directly via the Card Market or get them by participating in Live Events.
New to MyFaction this time around is an addicting roguelike system. The player pits their assembled stable against a gauntlet of randomized matches. While this new gameplay element is welcomed, the mode still has glaring flaws. MyFaction is often criticized by the fanbase for its perceived “pay-to-win” gameplay. Obtaining the best cards featuring popular superstars and alternate outfits may require considerable time or money. Microtransactions are abundant and heavily pushed, so this mode may not appeal to everyone.
MyRise
Serving as the predecessor to the MyCareer game mode in previous titles, MyRise functions as 2K24’s story mode. This time there are two branches to choose from: Unleashed and Undisputed. These two storylines are for custom female and male superstars respectively. Each path includes various choices that can alter the outcome and direction of the created character. Whether you wish to adopt a babyface or heel persona is your choice. As you progress, you will unlock more points to increase your attributes in an RPG-like fashion. Some matches can net rewards applicable outside of the mode, including MyFaction cards.
The Unleashed storyline features a prominent female independent wrestler looking to break into the big leagues of WWE. This is standard fare as far as wrestling game career modes go. In comparison, the Undisputed arc follows your created superstar attempting to win the Undisputed WWE Championship. Humorously, this is due to the current champion Roman Reigns vacating the title to pursue an acting career in Hollywood. Both paths have high points, but the Undisputed arc shines with its creativity.
MyGM
MyGM mode operates as a booking simulator where players choose a GM and maintain a brand. After drafting a roster, you must learn to control your budget wisely between talent contracts and arranging shows. The player can compete against both AI and other players in co-op gameplay. MyGM’s goal is to amass fans and become the most acclaimed brand when WrestleMania rolls around.
MyGM in 2K24 is similar to previous iterations, though there are some noteworthy inclusions. You can now manage the ECW brand and access new GM options including William Regal and Paul Heyman. The player can also negotiate trades with other GMs for wrestlers or borrow cash if the budget gets tight. This mode may be to your liking if you enjoy managing resources and competitive booking.
Universe Mode
Universe mode is essentially WWE 2K24’s sandbox mode. Players can assign whichever wrestlers they desire to any show and build cards without limitation. You can create Rivalries between your superstars or let the AI naturally develop them. Like MyGM, Universe mode deals more with navigating menus than raw gameplay. There are only a few new additions to the mode but some are worthwhile.
Players can finally allow double title matches, such as putting both the Intercontinental and United States titles on the line in the same battle. You can also set up a Loser Leaves Town match and send someone packing if they lose, upping the stakes for big feuds. Unlike MyGM, there are no money limitations or competitive aspects to Universe mode. The only limitation is your creativity. This also means there aren’t any true objectives beyond what you devise. Depending on your persuasion, this may be a selling point or a reason to bypass this mode.
Showcase of the Immortals
Like previous iterations of the Showcase mode, Showcase of the Immortals involves a set number of matches that revolve around a central theme. This time the theme features a celebration of noteworthy WrestleMania bouts from history. Each match contains historical footage and narration by WWE commentator Corey Graves. An in-game list of objectives helps the player recreate memorable moments in video game form. There is more variety to the contests the player will face given the scope of WrestleMania history. However, this variety also means less focus compared to previous Showcases.
While reliving great matches in a new context evokes nostalgia, there have been critiques levied against Showcase of the Immortals. Some of the matches excluded are head-scratchers. This is likely due to some talent currently employed in WWE’s rival promotion, AEW (such as Ric Flair). The archived footage used for background purposes features blurring of notable figures due to a lack of licensing rights. It would be wonderful to hear the iconic, booming voice of Howard Finkle, but it is understandable why we do not.
Other WWE 2K24 Game Modes
Beyond all the above game modes, WWE 2K24 offers new match types for players to try out. In Play mode, you can send your hated rival to the hospital in an Ambulance match. Or you can take a friend you secretly despise and bury him alive in a Casket match. The Creation Suite allows users to create custom superstars, entrances, arenas, and more. Is there a wrestler not featured that you want on your roster? Search the treasure trove of Community Creations and you may find them.
While the game has not been without controversy, there is no doubt that 2K24 is one of the better titles in the WWE library. Whether you want to meticulously plan stories or just have an all-out brawl, there is likely something that will pique your interest. There’s a mode for all types of players in this game.
