All We Know About Impressive Path of Exile 2

In the action role-playing game genre (ARPG) Path of Exile, the predecessor of the upcoming Path of Exile 2 has a mixed reception. It is loved by many, it was disliked by some, and completely avoided by certain others. Notably fans of a certain other RPG with action elements: Diablo.

Say what may, Path of Exile, a game that was now released over a decade ago is a solid end product. The free-to-play game was well received by critics and a sequel, all other things considered, was only a matter of time. But that was not to be. Considering the fact that the game was crowdfunded, the company has undergone some changes, notably the entry of Tencent as a major shareholder in 2018.

Now in 2024, Grinding Gear Games have announced the next installment in the series. Path of Exile 2. That is also free-to-play and will be available as early access this year. In this post, we explore what we know about the upcoming action RPG game.

Path of Exile 2 – More of the Same and Better

The first Path of Exile game got a lot of things right. Whilst it was natural that comparisons with the highly popular Diablo series of games were going to follow, the game designers at Grinding Gear Game set out to build an action RPG that whilst certainly containing elements that were at least inspired by Blizzard Entertainment’s masterpiece, also set out to included elements that truly unique and refreshing from a gameplay standpoint.

That was so good in fact: in terms of world-building, its complex but rewarding skill tree system, solid action pieces and great graphics, that some even see it as a worthy competitor to Diablo 4. A game that was released a decade later. So now with all of that behind us, the focus shifts towards the next game that is to set be release soon: Path of Exile 2.

In terms of gamer expectations, early glimpses into the game indicate that Path of Exile 2 intends to stay faithful to the original formula. The class-based character selection that provides unique gameplay styles depending on selection will be the starting point. This is aided by a vast and detailed world that is likely to demand a powerful GPU on higher settings. So the eye candy element is checked.

The Complex Skill Tree Remains with WSAD Movement

One of the standout (or notorious) features of the first Path of Exile game is the expansive skill tree and support gems remain and are likely to be as imposing as ever. Almost a game within a game, given the importance that is attached to skills for the progress of the game and the importance of making the right calls.

Another feature that is most welcome is the promise of WSAD movement for mouse and keyboard users. This is good for a number of reasons. For one thing it comes as an option, so players can alternate between point-and-click moments and WSAD at will. This is all good news considering that given the class focused gameplay, it will allow players to tailor their tactics better.

This freedom is supplemented by well over a dozen Ascendancy Classes. For those who haven’t played the first game, the Ascendancy Class upon access gives the player access to a class-specific skill tree, enabling further progression. This supporting skill-up tree is another interesting add on to game, that is set to continue in the upcoming game.

Path of Exile 2 – What Gamers Can Expect?

The early access trailer for Path of Exile 2 that was released a few days ago showcased a lot of promise notably for console gamers. There is a tendency in the industry that when it comes to such ARPGS with hack-n-slash elements that it is going to be PC-centric. Not so.

The gameplay trailer revealed fluid controls with clear indicators for console players, or those who prefer using controllers. Then there is couch co-op. The chance to take the game on with a friend as you sit back and relax, with your class and specific abilities complementing each other. What more can you ask for?

And the game is going to be free-to-play. So there is that. Thus the main concern is how strongly will Grinding Gear Game push the microtransactions part of the experience. Hopefully not too strongly. And if the main story holds, then we could be in for a treat.
