Controversial Assassin’s Creed Shadows Figurine Pulled Pre-2025 Release

Assassin's Creed Shadows

Since its beginning, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been the source of much controversy. Despite general fan excitement for the game, something seems to be holding it back from being celebrated. Much of that comes from Ubisoft themselves. During the press release of the upcoming game, the famous developer was involved in a lot of controversy. Now, it seems that there’s even more controversy surrounding the merchandise for the game. Here’s everything we know so far.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows was recently delayed until 2025, which has caused much discussion among fans. People have wondered why the game was postponed so close to release day. While Ubisoft has attributed the change to seeking the best possible quality for the game, fans wonder if there are things about the game the developers want to change due to consumer conversation.

Aside from the delay, Ubisoft has faced criticism for historical inaccuracies within Assassin’s Creed Shadows, anti-consumerism accusations, and fans feeling deceived after the collector’s editions were lowered in price. With early access being taken away as a perk and the price of the collector’s edition being reduced by $50, many fans felt they were stolen from. Ubisoft can’t catch a break regarding Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The conflict is a mixture of fans being too complex on the developers and them genuinely making many mistakes. This includes using Chinese subtitles rather than Japanese, which the company had to apologize for.

Controversial Figurine

Most recently, a figurine was removed from the Assassin’s Creed Shadows merchandise lineup. The design, which initially featured both protagonists, was deemed insensitive. The reason for the insensitivity is the Torii gate that was used in the background of the figurine, something that holds sacred religious significance. The creators of the figurine issued an apology when people pointed out the disrespect of the imagery. Pure Arts said, “We recently released an offensive design. We appreciate and have learned from the concerns brought to our attention, and we apologize for the harm this has caused.”

The figurine is now being reworked, though we don’t have an officially reworked design. Despite the redesign, fans aren’t forgetting this blunder that quickly. For them, it’s more proof that Ubisoft did the bare minimum of research about Japan before developing Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It’s not something that many are willing to forgive, especially given all of the company’s blunders.

Final Thoughts

For all that Ubisoft has done during the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it has stained the game with controversy. People are immersed in debate and discussion about all the mistakes and insensitive things that have occurred rather than the game itself. Either that, or they dislike the protagonists. It will be interesting to see how the fans react when the game is released. Will they judge it based on the game itself? Or all of the controversies that surrounded the title?
