Astro Bot: The Sequel to PS5’s Adorable Mascot

PlayStation’s State of Play happened yesterday afternoon, with some new games being announced and a few remakes of popular series. The last trailer they dropped was about a cute little robot traveling through PlayStation worlds with the consoles and controls as spaceships.

Out of all the games I saw being advertised, this one caught my attention. I had never heard of Astro Bot, and one of my favorite things to see in video games is references to other franchises. I see this as celebrating their accomplishments and a toast to a brighter future.

You might wonder who this little guy is and what his story is. Let’s find out together!

A Brief Introduction to Astro Bot

When PlayStation PS4 VR was announced in 2018, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission came with the set. This platformer lets the player travel to worlds and complete tasks to rescue his buddies.

I noticed in various outlets that this game is controlled completely by the player’s head movements instead of one of the joysticks. This innovative use of VR allows the player to be immersed in the world truly.

What’s New In The Sequel?

If there’s anything I really love in a game, it’s picking up artifacts from a bygone era or seeing references to older games in the franchise. Think of all the outfits you can get in Tears of the Kingdom. You can get the Windwaker set, Twilight Princess outfit, and even Majora’s Mask (if you are skilled enough to beat the bosses).

In the trailer, I saw references to Kratos from God of War, the nameless character from Journey, and Nathan Drake from Uncharted getting into another scrap. There were many more featured, but I knew about those few.

According to this news article, there will be around eighty levels spanning over six galaxies you can complete to rescue your friends. Fifteen new abilities are rumored to be featured with this little robot.

Forests, icy canyons, beaches, volcanoes, deserts, and even giant hourglasses are some of the worlds featured in the trailer.

My Thoughts for Astro Bot

One of the praises I saw for the trailer is that this game will be specifically designed for children, so parents won’t have to worry about what’s being put in their heads. Out of all the games advertised, this was the only one that did not have some horror or gory element to it. As someone who is easily jumpscared, this would be my kind of game to help the problem-solving parts of my brain.

With all the crossovers happening in this world, I will be more versed in the PlayStation roster of games, which makes the lore hunter in me very excited. Or maybe I really want to swing the Leviathan Axe around; who knows?
