Gamescom has allowed us to see what new exciting games are being worked on. Many new exciting titles are being hyped following their announcement during the week of Gamescom, one noteworthy title in particular is Atomfall. Atomfall is an upcoming post-apocalyptic survival game that seems to be inspired by actual real-life events, it is set to release sometime in March 2025. Rebellion is currently developing it, known for its WWII Shooter titles like the Sniper Elite series and Zombie titles such as the Zombie Army series.
The Story of Atomfall so far
The game takes place around the 1950s as atomic and nuclear innovation started to take off, the protagonist is in the town of Windscale which is part of Cumberland in Northern England. A proclaimed “state-of-the-art” atomic powerplant rests in the quiet town to provide energy for all people of Windscale. However, due to mysterious circumstances, the powerplant experienced a meltdown and was destroyed in the process. 5 years later, the protagonist lives in a town with a self-imposed “temporary quarantine”, the citizens do not know when the quarantine will be lifted nor what is going on beyond the walls of the town. Wanting answers to the mysteries of the wasteland beyond the walls and the circumstances behind the atom plant’s meltdown, the protagonist ventures out beyond the town to search for answers. This game is likely based on the Chornobyl disaster that left an entire city and many of its residents irradiated after the nuclear power plant experienced a meltdown of its own. It wouldn’t be surprising if gamers also got Fallout vibes from this game.
The World of Windscale
Gameplay
This game takes a different route from the usual third-person shooters like Sniper Elite, instead becoming a first-person survival action game with resource management. The player must use different tools at their disposal to find materials throughout the wasteland. What will these contribute to in the final game is unclear as of right now but it wouldn’t come as a surprise if these materials were used to craft useful items for exploration, stealth, and/or combat. There are many citizens and persons of interest to talk about throughout the game, there is much potential for a hefty amount of side quests that can reward with rare materials, unique items or weapons not found anywhere else in the game, and more lore about the world of Atomfall.
Friend or Foe
Not everything is as it seems in the society of Windscale. The Atomic Power Plant was supposed to be a technical marvel that was crucial to advancing the fields of science for everyone. However, how can such a proclaimed “state-of-the-art” power plant fail under such mysterious circumstances that were never shared with the public? The governing bodies of Windscale are trying to hide the truth. But what? Not to mention, with all the other survivors, bandits, and other factions waging war on each other, the truth seems to be further out of reach for those who want to know. At the ruins of the plant, protrudes a strange blue aura around it, is it trying to keep people out, or is it trying to keep something in?
Departing Thoughts
Atomfall has been an interesting topic of discussion in the gaming community since it was announced. More specifically, the fans of the post-apocalyptic genre are noting what makes this game special above all other indie titles shown at Gamescom. Rebellion has a lot to measure up to in the nuclear post-apocalyptic genre with heavy hitters such as Fallout. Atomfall is available for wishlist on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
