BattleZoo Bestiary: Elemental Storm Turns D&D To Epic Monster Hunter

BattleZoo Bestiary: Elemental Storm

Maybe you’re a fan of the Monster Hunter franchise, or maybe you’ve just always wondered why your party doesn’t make use of the scads of monster carcasses it leaves behind. Either way, BattleZoo Bestiary: Elemental Storm is the perfect product for you.

What’s In A BattleZoo Bestiary

In case you’re unfamiliar with the products, small publisher Roll For Combat has been making BattleZoo titles for a while now, including multiple successful Kickstarter campaigns. Not only do the titles add new monsters to kill, but they also contain player options in the form of monstrous ancestries. On top of that, they offer some really cool optional rules to flesh out your game.

All monsters featured in BattleZoo Bestiaries are winners of an open monster design contest. The winners are chosen by a panel of industry professionals, meaning all of the monsters within aren’t just award-winning; they’re peer-reviewed. What this means is that you can expect truly interesting monster design that will surprise and amaze your players each and every time you trot one out.

What’s In Elemental Storm

You can, of course, expect a host of fantastic new monsters, this time themed after the elements. It doesn’t end there, however, as there are several new elemental spells. Keep in mind, when they’re saying “elements,” they aren’t only speaking of fire, earth, air, and water; they’re throwing many other interesting ideas into the mix, such as time, space, and music.

That’s also not even the most interesting part of the book. Within its pages, players will find rules for the Monster Part system. This does two major things. First, it allows players to target specific parts of a monster to weaken them, an idea with which fans of the Monster Hunter franchise will be familiar. Second, and possibly more exciting, it allows players to use parts from the monsters they slay to craft new equipment. Finally, you can turn a dragon’s teeth into a sword, and its scaly hide into a hat.

But I Don’t Trust Third-Party Content

Plenty of people really get the ick when you start talking about introducing third-party content to the table. That’s totally understandable; after all, small publishers don’t have the resources to playtest everything as thoroughly as the big guys. Things probably aren’t vetted the same way. However, there’s a very good reason to trust BattleZoo content beyond their track record of publishing quality material.

One of the people behind BattleZoo is Mark Seifter, who is also one of the co-creators of Pathfinder 2e. In particular, he is often credited as the person responsible for making the math behind Pathfinder so tight. Therefore, you can expect BattleZoo content to be balanced, potentially more so than some of what Wizards of the Coast prints.

Final Words

If you’re truly against using third-party material for your games, there’s probably not much anyone can say to change your mind. However, keep in mind that many fans consider BattleZoo an extension of the official content, given Mark Seifter’s involvement. In the event that you are not a Pathfinder fan, the content is also available as D&D 5e supplements. The project has already garnered over $134,000, and given the history of Roll For Combat, it is in no danger of not fulfilling. If you’re even a little curious, give it a look.
