If you enjoy cozy cooking games, this one might be for you. This goes especially for the ones who don’t have countless hours to grind to make a fictional business a success. Bed and BEAKfast is a cutesy game full of colorful and unique characters. It has a nice story that takes place within an artful environment that’s quite pleasing to the eye. If that doesn’t draw your attention enough, the fact that you can play for free just might.
Everything about this game drew me in when I was browsing the New Releases category on Steam, and I decided to give it the chance I think most games deserve. I am now happy to bring you my thoughts about the free demo of Bed and BEAKfast.
Introducing Bed and BEAKfast
The demo for Bed and BEAKfast was released on May 3, 2024, and it is currently the only game developed and published by Operation Breadcrumbs on Steam. You can find content involving the development of this project from the team’s charming TikTok and X pages. I took some time out of my schedule to scroll through their posts and thoroughly enjoyed watching a bit of their creative process. It’s always nice to see how much developers care about their works of art, especially indie developers.
In the game, you play the role of Robin, an anthropomorphic bird who inherited a bed and breakfast from their late grandfather. It becomes your job to restore the once delightful business and help your community thrive once more. You do this by learning and crafting recipes to serve the other colorful birds that visit your tree. Throughout the story, you connect with members of your community, you make new bonds, and you try to rekindle old ones while cooking some delicious meals.
The backstory you receive before you fly into the game reminds me of a bit of Stardew Valley, but Bed and BEAKfast in its current state takes way less time to complete. While I do enjoy a game that I can get lost in for days or weeks, like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Dragon’s Dogma 2, it is also important to appreciate shorter games since they are their artform. However, as I mentioned before, this is a demo of the full game. I am currently not sure how long the full game will be or how much it will cost.
What I Appreciate About the Game
The adorable art and the cast of colorful avian characters are what shines in Bed and BEAKfast. As someone who takes pleasure in seeing just what people can do with 2D art, I find the digital drawings in this game to be quite pleasing to the eye. I believe the art style Operation Breadcrumbs chose to use is perfect, and I don’t recall seeing a game with a very similar style to this one. It’s simple and not overly detailed, but it still excels at making every cartoony character resemble their quirks.
Speaking of the lovely birds you can meet in Bed and BEAKfast, they each reminded me of caricatures. Each of them has its own main trait that ranges from feeling sympathetic to adorable, to eccentric, etc. I don’t want to give too many spoilers about the characters you can meet, but I will admit certain ones did get a chuckle out of me. Any game that manages to do that gets an extra point in my book.

What Could Be Improved Upon
While I did enjoy the cooking mechanics in Bed and BEAKfast, especially since I found it to be more challenging than the average cooking game, there is room for improvement. When being tasked with making certain recipes that I hadn’t made before, the descriptions of those food items could be a bit vague. This caused me to combined certain ingredients, get the wrong thing, and start the day over from the beginning because I didn’t want to waste ingredients. I feel like adding slightly more specific instructions would improve the process greatly.
As well as improving the cooking directions a bit, I feel like a proper save feature would very much so benefit this game. Bed and BEAKfast autosaves when you get to a new day, so it does save progress in that way. However, during one of the times that I launched it, I accidentally chose the option to start a new game. I closed the game as soon as this happened, but when I hit reopened it and selected to continue, I was taken back to the very beginning. While this was my fault, I find no reason to not have a true save option for clumsy clickers like myself.
Of course, since it was just the demo that I played, any issues can be fixed. Countless improvements and additions can be made as well. Despite the small troubles that I had, I hope for only the best for this addition to the world of cozy games.
Wrapping Up Before Leaving the Nest
All in all, I found Bed and BEAKfast to be a charming little game made by a team of developers who truly love and care for this project. I think that care does show in the story, art, and gameplay itself. In my countless hours browsing Steam for games that pique my interest, I have encountered many who have no real spirit, no inspiration, or no love. I am quite glad to say that Bed and BEAKfast is not one of those games.
