7. Gotham Knights (2022)

Developer: WB Games

Release Date: October 21, 2022

Platform(s): PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Despite its determined scope, Gotham Knights failed to meet the towering expectations left behind by the Arkham Legacy. While it offers an open-world Gotham and multiple playable heroes, many players found the combat clunky, the emotional impact lacking, and the mission structure repetitive. The removal of the Dark Knight as a playable character wasn’t a brave choice. While the co-op multiplayer was a nice addition, it couldn’t fully compensate for the lack of polish and depth.

6. Batman: The Telltale Series (2016)

Developer: Telltale Games

Release Date: August 2, 2016

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC, macOS, Android, iOS

This point-and-click, story-heavy adventure stands apart with its focus on dialogue and moral choice. While it’s refreshing to step into Bruce Wayne’s shoes and make weighty decisions, the game lacks traditional action. Its episodic structure and occasional technical glitches also held it back from reaching wider acclaim.

5. Batman: Arkham Origins (2013)

Developer: WB Games Montréal

Release Date: October 25, 2013

Platform(s): PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U

Though considered the black sheep of the Arkham series, Origins is far from a bad game. It introduces a gripping story about the Caped Crusader’s early days and his first encounters with the Joker. However, the reused assets and lack of innovation compared to Arkham City left fans uninterested and wanting more.

4. Batman: Arkham VR (2016)

Developer: Rocksteady Studios

Release Date: October 11, 2016

Platform(s): PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive

This game in virtual reality is on another level of gaming, but Arkham VR isn’t actually a full-fledged Batman game. The game has an immersive first-person Batman experience, and intuitive detective gameplay in virtual reality is a game changer, despite the experience being less than two hours long.

3. Batman: Arkham Knight (2015)

The final chapter in the Arkham series gleamed with its visuals, open-world Gotham, and improved combat mechanics. The Batmobile segments, while divisive, added new depth. Its complex plot, with Scarecrow as the villain and the mysterious Knight, kept the fans on edge.

2. Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009)

Developer: Rocksteady Studios

Release Date: August 25, 2009

Platform(s): PS3, Xbox 360, PC

The original masterpiece. Arkham Asylum delivered atmospheric storytelling and innovative gameplay that redefined superhero games. Set within the claustrophobic halls of the infamous asylum, it made players feel like the Dark Knight through every punch, glide, and gadget.

Release Date: October 18, 2011

Arkham City expanded everything that made its predecessor great. With a sprawling urban sandbox, more villains, and refined mechanics, it remains the gold standard for superhero games. Its narrative complexity and sense of freedom elevated it beyond its genre peers.
