Best Class for Dragon Age Inquisition

Dragon Age Inquisition

Dragon Age Inquisition, like its predecessors, features three character classes: Warrior, Rogue, and Mage. Each party member fits into one of these three classes, and the player must choose one of them for their custom main character. With each game reinventing the combat system, players may wonder if different choices function better for each game. With class affecting story and gameplay, picking the right one seems important. While every choice can make for a good high-level playthrough, certain choices stand above others. In Dragon Age Inquisition, the best option by far is to play as a Mage.

Afraid for the Ramifications

If you know much about the Dragon Age mythos, you will understand that Mages come with a lot of baggage. Within the continent of Thedas, their power is feared and often kept under control. For simplicity’s sake, however, the player character is never made out to be a full-on criminal in the eyes of those who care. More often than not, your role in saving the world supersedes any worries people have about you as a Mage walking free. The story of Dragon Age Inquisition kicks off with a gathering of Mages and Templars to sort out their differences, which makes a Mage main character directly important to the action that ignites the plot.

As the story progresses, being a Mage offers you a lot of interesting insights. When you make choices about the potential freedom (or lack thereof) for all Mages, you have a personal stake. When characters like Solas bring up complex magical phenomena as part of their backstory, a Mage protagonist can interact much more easily. The game consistently will make note of how unusual it is for a Mage to be placed in the position of a seemingly chosen hero. While you may think this makes your role as an inspiring leader harder, it only makes the story that much more epic when you succeed at being the hero the world needs.

Unbeatable Machine

As an RPG series, careful work is generally put into balancing character builds. Picking one option precludes another, with each class having its benefits and drawbacks. However, making a game perfectly balanced is hard, and Bioware didn’t quite hit the mark in Dragon Age Inquisition. The combat in this installment removes the ability for any class to directly heal HP outside of a powerful finishing move rarely available. Most of the time, your goal is preventing damage to spare yourself from wasting potions. Warriors and Mages provide the two main opportunities: Guard and Barriers, respectively. Each acts as a separate layer of HP that is damaged before your actual HP.

A particular build will emerge in the midgame that takes these two mechanics and makes them insanely powerful if you are playing a Mage. As a Knight-Enchanter, one of the Mage specializations, you can acquire a passive trait that gives you a little bit of barrier every time you do damage. This includes attacking with spells or basic attacks. You will also reach the point where you can craft armor with special passive abilities as well. Players may take note of one of the more powerful choices: Giving the user Guard every time you deal damage. Equipping yourself with these two things means that every hit you deal with will build up your defenses. In short, you became nigh unkillable.

Final Thoughts

Is the build I suggest balanced against the others? Not even a little. While Warriors and Rogues can acquire the Guard-on-hit equipment, only a Mage can also generate their own Barriers on hit. A Knight-Enchanter will build up infinite defenses as they engage enemies with their Spirit Blade. This melee Mage build makes you a mobile magic machine. While you may take more damage than your allies at first, you can eventually even craft Heavy Armor for your Mage. Combining all these factors makes the Mage a tank to be reckoned with. While other classes can be fun, Mage is the single best class to play in Dragon Age Inquisition for story and gameplay purposes combined.
