Final Fantasy 6 has one of the largest casts of any entry in the illustrious franchise with a total count of fourteen permanent party members, nearly all of which are well-loved by the community. Although much of the early game leaves you with little choice on what characters to include in your party, once your options open up, it can be tough to know what characters you should include. There are, though, some that can definitely make your life easier as you enjoy the story of Final Fantasy 6.
Physical Attackers
Sabin
Sabin functions as the party’s monk. Not only do his normal attacks pack a punch (so to speak), but his special Blitz commands are really something to behold. Sabin has the ability to deal some of the highest single-target damage numbers in all of Final Fantasy 6 and also boasts some utility in the form of impressive healing abilities. Plus, he can suplex a train.
Cyan
Cyan fills the samurai role in Final Fantasy 6. He is a strong physical attacker with a variety of powerful skills within the Bushido command. However, many of these skills deal magic damage, despite his low Magic stat, as well as some that inflict status ailments that are easily blocked by enemy resistances. That, coupled with the fact that the player cannot issue commands to other characters why the Bushido command charges, means that players will need to exercise caution when using him, despite how powerful he can be.
Shadow
If you’re willing to dump large sums of gil into it, Shadow can deal a tremendous amount of physical damage with his Throw command. Most weapons can be thrown, along with shuriken and scroll items. Because thrown items bypass enemy defense, they can deal tremendous amounts of damage, especially to enemies that resist physical attacks. It does require an investment to use the command consistently.
Magical Attackers
Strago
Strago is an acceptable magic user. As the designated blue mage for the group, he is able to learn enemy abilities, called Lores in Final Fantasy 6. However, they’re not particularly strong, so will likely only be worth the effort for completionists and fans of the gimmick, although they do lend him a certain amount of versatility. He also is restricted from equipping any female-only armor, much of which can boost magic performance. Regardless, he has a very serviceable Magic stat and can deal good damage with spells.
Terra
The main character of Final Fantasy 6, Terra, is overall the strongest magic user in the game, and one of the most powerful in the franchise. She has the second-highest Magic stat in the game, and she is able to equip the aforementioned female-only armor, giving her a significant advantage over most of the rest of the cast. What’s more, her Trance ability can give her a huge boost to her magic power, putting her way over the top. While transformed, Terra also takes less damage from attacks, but the ability only lasts for a short amount of time and requires a number of fights to recharge, so should be saved for tough bosses.
Relm
Relm is the character with the highest Magic stat, so that coupled with her access to the magic-boosting female-exclusive equipment means that she is the most consistent magic user in Final Fantasy 6. The drawback there, however, is her comparatively weak special command, Sketch, which could notoriously crash early versions of the game. She is also one of the last characters to join the party, so players might not want to start investing time into her so late in the game.
Special Purposes
Celes
Celes is a capable magic user but her true strength lies in her Runic command. She is able to absorb any incoming or outgoing magic, which restores her MP. This can be used to keep her charged as a healing battery while also protecting the party from dangerous spells. Players do need to be careful not to absorb their own spells, however.
Edgar
Edgar makes for a fine blunt instrument against most normal enemies through most of Final Fantasy 6. Even from his first appearance, he can deal large amounts of damage to entire groups of enemies. He later gets the ability to inflict a variety of status effects and deal truly debilitating amounts of damage. Since his Tools require no MP and have unlimited uses, there’s truly no reason to not include him in your party.
Locke
Finally, Locke, Final Fantasy 6’s thief, performs exactly as you would expect. He has a reasonably high damage output, and is surprisingly durable for a thief. And, of course, through his Steal (or the upgraded Mug) command, he can try to walk away with anything that’s not nailed down, giving the party often early access to powerful items. He’s definitely not the strongest party member, but with a little luck and patience, he can make up for his deficiencies by powering up the rest of the party.
A Heroic Cast
With fourteen characters to fill four party slots with, there can definitely be some tough choices to make. However, when it comes down to it, most fights can be handled by most party compositions. While there are strategies that leverage character strengths to make certain fights easier, it’s certainly not the only way to play Final Fantasy 6, and with the recent release of the Pixel Remaster, there’s no better time to experience the journey. The entire cast is made up of heroic individuals capable of heroic deeds, which empowers you to play in the way that makes you happiest, as long as you don’t plan on fighting the eight dragons.
