The Best Nintendo Controller to Use in 2024

Listen, Joy-Cons are cool, but for me, they’re super uncomfortable to play with for long periods of time. My picks of the best Nintendo controller options to try in 2024 cover some awesome options, from third-party options to the official Pro Controller. Don’t get me wrong, I think they were a game changer in the gaming space but I still find myself opting for a traditional controller when playing my favorite titles.

A good gaming experience always boils down to your controller, if it’s uncomfortable to hold then you aren’t going to enjoy the experience and may even not play as well. A perfect example is I don’t find the Joycons comfortable or reliable enough when I’m playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The Best Nintendo Controller to Use in 2024

The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is arguably the best Nintendo controller for Switch gamers. Truthfully, I can see why! The features this controller offers along with the build quality make it an option that really stands out. The Pro Controller was designed to offer a premium gaming experience and it has HD rumble, motion controls, and a wireless connection that beats every other controller you can buy today.

Advantages:

  • Has a well-balanced weight and is durable overall.
  • Comfortable for long gaming sessions.
  • Includes HD rumble and motion controls.
  • Great for a wide range of games and play styles.

Drawbacks:

  • Expensive, especially in comparison to third-party options.
  • Unlike some third-party controllers, no customization options.

PowerA Enhanced Wireless Controller

The PowerA Enhanced Wireless Controller is another favorite of mine. It’s an awesome budget-friendly controller for Switch players. The functionality it offers for the price is unbeatable. I recommend this controller to anyone looking for a great controller but doesn’t want to spend a lot of money.

This controller is officially licensed by Nintendo, ensuring both compatibility and quality. I especially love the design options available. You can find controllers based on your favorite games and characters like Mario, Pikachu, Link, and even Peely from Fortnite! This is one of the best Nintendo controller options out there.

Advantages:

  • A durable budget-friendly option that doesn’t compromise on features.
  • Has two programmable buttons for improved gameplay.
  • Long-lasting battery life of up to 30 hours.

Drawbacks:

  • Doesn’t have HD rumble and motion controls, which are required for some games.
  • Requires AA Batteries

Hori Split Pad Pro

The Hori Split Pad Pro is, in my opinion, the best Nintendo controller to use in 2024 for handheld play. It was specifically designed to address the limitations of the standard Joy-Cons. I love the Split Pad Pro because of its ergonomic design, and I’ve had no issues with comfort while playing for long periods. The Hori Split Pad Pro tends to be favored by gamers who play action-filled titles that require precise controls.

Advantages:

  • The larger size and ergonomic design make it great for long handheld sessions.
  • Features analog sticks, a D-pad, and bigger shoulder buttons to provide better control and precision.
  • Specifically created to improve the handheld gaming experience.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks HD rumble and motion controls, which are needed for certain games.
  • Cannot be used when the Switch is docked.

8BitDo Pro 2

The 8BitDo Pro 2 is a versatile controller loved by retro gamers and one of the best Nintendo controller options. Its design pays homage to the classic Nintendo controllers but has contemporary features that enhance functionality. Gamers love the Pro 2 because of its comfortable grip and recognizable layout. It mirrors the classic SNES controller but the creators have also incorporated dual analog sticks and an additional set of shoulder buttons. This blend of old and new makes it a great choice for a wide range of Nintendo Switch games.

Advantages:

  • Works well for both retro and modern games.
  • Customization options like button remapping and profile settings.
  • Features Hall Effect sensors to reduce joystick drift and enhance accuracy.
  • The comfortable design ensures you don’t experience any discomfort when playing

Drawbacks:

  • The customization options can be confusing.
  • Expensive in comparison to basic third-party controllers.
