The Best of the Fallout 4 Soundtrack

Fallout 4 soundtrack is great

Music is as essential to gaming as oxygen is to people’s lives. Lucky for us, the Fallout 4 soundtrack is loaded with oxygen. It’s certainly one of the top gaming soundtracks of the century. The nominations and accolades received back that up for sure. Those opening discordant notes immediately draw players into the post-apocalyptic world of the Commonwealth. Listening to a secretly famous barfly in Goodneighbor will make you stay awhile. Switch on Diamond City Radio and that’s all she wrote.

Fallout 4 Soundtrack and Score

Fans of the Fallout series should recognize composer Inon Zur. The creator/contributor to the soundtracks of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas returns to the franchise to create the score for the game. Those eerie, atmospheric piano tones? The rich ambient sounds of the Commonwealth? All thanks to this well-known and far-reaching gaming music composer. A complete list of all 65 tracks of the score as opposed to the Fallout 4 soundtrack can be found here.

Lynda Carter (the original Wonder Woman herself) was tapped for the Fallout 4 soundtrack, featuring several original songs. “Good Neighbor”, “Man Enough”, and three others are all original tracks recorded for the game. The five tracks were written and performed by Lynda Carter, John Jarvis, and Kerry Marx. Carter herself appears in digital form as Magnolia, a character appropriately found in Goodneighbor town. She is located in the Third Rail bar and can be chatted up or romanced – to an extent.

Licensed Musical Tracks

While Magnolia sings her own original songs, Diamond City Radio plays several from that pre-war era. There is a theme to these well-known classics and lesser-known novelties. As director Todd Howard explains, “Back when these songs came out, society was fueled by a utopian optimism that stood in stark contrast with the apocalyptic nature of world-destroying atomic weapons.”

Tracks on this list range from Ella Fitzgerald to Billie Holiday to crooners like Bing Crosby and so many others. But the real treat here is the trove of novelties such as “Crawl Out Through the Fallout” and “Uranium Fever.” The juxtaposition of whimsical lyrics and bouncy music with the severity of the situation is key. Several stellar artists of the time appeared for multiple tracks, such as Betty Hutton and The Ink Spots. These feel-good or emotional tracks all do their part to cement Fallout 4‘s dystopian universe.

Nostalgia is the Best Chem

Bethesda clearly made some very strong decisions when creating just the right musical vibe. Bringing back an award-winning composer and mixing new and old music. Nostalgia is as powerful a drug as a “chem” as they say in the Fallout universe. They even have a location in the game where citizens can replay lifelong memories. Unlike in-game, memory pods aren’t necessary here to garner that same feeling. The entirety of the Fallout 4 soundtrack throws us back, triggering nostalgia for a time that never actually existed.
