The Ys series, like many RPGs, has many different weapons that players can obtain across the series. From the different swords Adol can find across the earlier games, to the weaponry of his party members in the modern entries, their strengths vary as much as how they’re obtained. Some are crafted, while others can be found in chests, and others are obtained as part of story events. With Nordics’ release around the corner, let’s take a look at the best weapons from across the Ys series. This article will include spoilers for the games these weapons come from.
Dragon Stone Weapons (Seven)
In the second half of Ys Seven, Adol and his party do battle with the legendary Five Dragons of Altago. Upon defeat, each dragon gives the party a Dragon Stone, a condensed form of their power. Late in the game, after discovering the supposedly lost village of Iska, one of the Iskans tells the party that they can synthesize powerful weapons using the Dragon Stones. This synthesis requires materials from the final dungeon of the game, such as Soul Stones and Crystalized Twigs. However, grinding for the required materials is well worth the effort, not only because of the music in the final dungeon.
In particular, Adol’s sword Caliocerion is the strongest weapon in the Ys series, boasting a strength increase of 457. Synthesizing it requires 50 Soul Stones and 30 Titano Spines, as well as the Moon Dragon’s Stone. Caliocerion is also unique in that it sets Adol’s damage type to All, while the other party members’ weapons keep with their designated damage types. The other party members’ weapons are still worth synthesizing, especially with the final boss requiring all of them to fight rather than solely the active party, but Caliocerion is by far the best out of the Dragon Stone weapons.
Mistilteinn (Lacrimosa of Dana)
Lacrimosa of Dana, like many of the modern entries in the Ys series, features a weapon upgrade system. When the blacksmith Kathleen joins Castaway Village, she can upgrade the party’s weapons when they give her materials from around the Isle of Seiren. At certain points in the game, Kathleen won’t be able to upgrade weapons further without being given a Flame Stone. Each weapon has 3 upgrade levels, just like the skills.
Mistilteinn, like Caliocerion, is special. Rather than being obtained by upgrading prior weapons, it’s obtained during a story event near the very end of the game. Partway through Chapter 6, Adol gets chosen to be a Warden of Evolution. As is his nature, he refuses to sit idly by. This leads to him learning about Seren Garden, a place crafted by the first Warden in the hopes of one day seeing the end of the Lacrimosa. At the center of the garden is the Tree of Psyches. It starts out being weak, but defeating the three Wardens’ psyches strengthens the tree. Regardless of what sword Adol has equipped, the Tree of Psyches will turn it into Mistilteinn.
Mythical Weapons (Monstrum Nox)
Monstrum Nox also features a set of weapons for every party member that can be obtained at the end of the game. Much like Lacrimosa of Dana, these weapons also have 3 levels to their upgrades. Upgrading a weapon past this third level instead turns it into the base-level version of the next weapon in the chain.
In Monstrum Nox’s final dungeon, one of the chests will contain the Mythical Blueprints. These can be brought to Tito, who will need materials to make the first legendary weapon. Specifically, he will ask for one Otherworldly Core, four Sol Spars, and four Sacred Branches. With these items, he’ll make one of the legendary weapons for free. Creating any other legendary weapons costs 5000 gold and that same amount of materials. Upgrading them further requires more Otherworldly Cores, Sol Spars, and Sacred Branches.
Honorable Mentions
Silver Sword (Ancient Ys Vanished, Origin)
In Ancient Ys Vanished, the Silver Sword isn’t the weapon with the highest damage in the game. Instead, that honor goes to the Flame Sword. However, the Flame Sword cannot defeat the final boss. The final boss can only be damaged by silver weapons, which is why he’s been stealing all silver items across the game. This legendary sword can be found by eating a Roda Seed and talking to the southern Roda Tree after returning the Silver Harmonica to its rightful owner.
Ys Origin expands on this lore by introducing the same Silver Sword that Adol finds as being Toal‘s own weapon from when he was a Holy Knight of Ys. Feena returns it to him before he confronts the game’s final boss, none other than his own father. Cain Fact merges with the Black Pearl after taking Dalles’ demonic essence, turning him into the demon Darm.
Cleria Sword (Ancient Ys Vanished – Final Chapter)
It’s fitting that the Cleria Sword from Ancient Ys Vanished – Final Chapter also is required to beat the final boss, given that the final boss of Ys 2 is Darm himself. He was sealed in the Black Pearl at the end of Ys Origin, but by the time of Ys 1 and Ys 2, the seal was coming undone. This is why monsters have been appearing around Esteria, and why demons like Dalles and Zava are returning despite having been killed during the events of Ys Origin.
Final Thoughts
Interesting and unique weapons have always been a staple of the Ys series. With Nordics releasing in a couple of weeks, what kind of weapons might Adol and Karja be able to use as the game progresses? Will they be able to upgrade their weaponry, or will they find new ones much like in the first two games in the series?
