Best Cards for Your Yugioh Deck

When the Yugioh franchise started in 1996, the franchise has captivated fans worldwide. The Yugioh card game has remained one of the most popular tabletop games for the whole of its existence. Nowadays, there are a number of cards that slot perfectly into most decks. This article will go over what these staples are, and why you should use them.

What is a Staple?

In Yugioh terminology, a staple is a card that you should put into most decks. These cards usually lack restrictions that would keep them from being useful and aren’t part of any established archetype. Generally, staples can be split into three main types: hand traps, board breakers, and extra deck threats.

Hand Traps

A hand trap is a card that can be activated from the hand during your opponent’s turn. These cards serve to disrupt their combos and keep them from establishing a useful board presence. The first-hand trap ever introduced was Kuriboh, which stops damage from an attack.

    • Ash Blossom and Joyous Spring: Part of the “Ghost Girl” series of hand traps, Ash Blossom is one of Yugioh’s most-used cards. It can block an opponent from adding a card to their hand, summoning a monster from the deck, or sending a card from the deck to the graveyard.
    • Droll & Lock Bird: Unlike Ash Blossom, which stops a single card, Droll can stop your opponent from adding any cards from their deck to their hand. This is a powerful effect, but it requires your opponent to add a card before you can activate it.
    • Infinite Impermanence: A trap card, Impermanence can also be set to gain an additional effect. If you have no cards on the field, you can use this card from your hand to stop the effect of any monster your opponent controls.

Board Breakers

Board breakers are cards that remove your opponent’s field, or make it easier for you to remove their field. This can mean destroying their monsters, wiping out their spells, or rendering their cards unable to use any effects. Generally, these cards are helpful if you are forced to go second.

  • Raigeki: A very old Yugioh card, Raigeki has a simple but strong effect. It destroys all monsters your opponent controls. This is perfect for wiping out troublesome monsters before they can interfere with your combo.
  • Dark Hole: Similar to Raigeki, Dark Hole destroys all monsters on the field. This may seem weaker than Raigeki, but remember that this includes anything that your opponent has summoned onto your field.
  • Dark Ruler No More: Often abbreviated to DRNM by Yugioh players, this card negates the effects of all monsters your opponent currently controls. Notably, your opponent cannot activate monster effects when you cast this spell. This card is perfect for removing any anti-destruction effects on monsters, leaving them open for a Raigeki or Dark Hole. Do note, however, that after using this card your opponent will not take any damage for the rest of this turn.

Extra Deck Threats

These cards are the most subject to change, based on the current meta. Right now, there are two excellent choices for cards to slot into your extra deck. Keep an eye out for newly released cards, to determine which would fit well into your deck.

  • Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS – Sky Thunder: ZEUS is a fan-favorite card that is receiving a plastic model kit in the near future. This massive mech can be summoned by using an XYZ monster as material, on a turn where an XYZ monster attacked. ZEUS can, as a quick effect, send every other card on the field to the graveyard. This effect costs two materials but can be used more than once per turn. ZEUS also gets to gain material every time a card on the field is destroyed.
  • Super Starslayer TY-PHON – Sky Crisis: Designed as a counterpart to ZEUS, TY-PHON can be summoned on the turn after your opponent summoned 2 or more extra deck monsters, by using only the strongest monster you control as material. While on the field, TY-PHON keeps any monsters with 3000 or more attacks from activating any effects. Since it’s easy to summon, you can make TY-PHON to keep your opponent from using any of their strongest monsters. As an added bonus, TY-PHON can detach a material to bounce a monster on the field back to the hand.
