And the year presses on for Magic: The Gathering with some great expansions coming our way. One of the things that has kept Magic: The Gathering relevant over the years is constant updates with new expansions. As they’re all laid out, the talk about Bloomburrow increases in wonder as to what to expect and how strangely unique this set will be. Come with me as we explore what this new expansion has to offer, so without further ado, here’s the scoop on everything we know about what’s slated to release on August 2, 2024.
Welcome to a Lovely Magical Place Called Bloomburrow!
This is definitely not Innistrad. Just warning you right there. This isn’t even Ikoria — and the beasts there were plentiful. Outlaws of Thunder Junction? This is supremely not! But that’s okay, because the twists are real with this one in ways that may delight you.
To start off, since we’ll be fresh off the heals of the likes of Modern Horizons 3 and Assassin’s Creed (which most likely won’t have anything to do with current MTG story arcs) and others like Murders at Karlov Manor or the Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Bloomburrow kicks off a brand-new story arc after the recent Thunder Junction set finished off the last (which was the Omenpath arc).
This New Arc Will Be Called the “Dragonstorm”
It conjures some familiar images — specifically in Tarkir! With, of course, you guessed it — dragons.
I know what you’re saying, though. We’ve had dragons in droves in this MTG release schedule, and chances we may not see the card you’re observing above reprinted with Bloomburrow (Yet. Possibly. Perhaps.). But the guess with this is Bloomburrow has been discovered to be a world that shouldn’t even exist due to a rupture in the MTG multiverse (yeah, thanks, Elesh Norn, put some damn clothes on).
The “dragonstorm” as it’s called may be what’s conjured up these new realities. And it’s up to three former planeswalkers to reunite once more (not entirely sure what planeswalkers, but saying they’re three just sounds right, you know?). Why? To not seal away the Eldrazi. But to resurrect them!
Duh-duh-duuuuuuum.
Seriously, you have to love these MTG storylines, because they definitely give depth to how the expansions play out. We saw it big time with the March of the Machines and the Aftermath follow-up set, led by as far back as Kaldheim up to Phyrexia: All Will Be One. The next Phyrexian invasion was indeed eminent and epic.
But is that all Bloomburrow will be about? Not at all!
Bloomburrow Sounds Like the Only Set in a Long While That Will Not Feature Humans as a Creature Type
You heard that correctly: it’ll be more about frogs, mice, rabbits, squirrels, lizards, insects, cats, dogs. Any other animal you’d think would be featured in a set that would be about something straight out of Disney or The Secret of NIMH.
I don’t know about you, but I find that utterly magical. And perhaps refreshing.
Because if you haven’t guessed quite yet — humans for quite some time have been definitively a very dominant tribal deck. Think cards like Katilda Dawnheart Prime, the Coppercoat Vanguard, Sigarda Champion of Light or Sigarda Font of Blessings. You want a resilient deck to work with? Humans are a sure way to go.
But with Bloomburrow, that might not be the case anymore.

We honestly don’t even know what new mechanics might show up at Bloomburrow, so it only remains to be seen. Until then, we’re still stuck with loving it up with cowboys at Thunder Junction, detectives at Karlov Manor, and a host of phyrexians, vampires, demons, and werewolves. I think we should be pretty entertained until then.
