Borderlands 4 Teased by Powerful Gearbox Exec

Despite the recent failure of the Borderlands film adaptation, that will not be the end for the franchise. Gearbox’s CEO, Randy Pitchford, recently dropped a strong hint that Borderlands 4 was in development. While many were disappointed in the failed film, many others are naturally excited to see the franchise return. The Borderlands franchise is one of the more inventive series to grace the industry with its wacky humor and loot-based gameplay, so a fanbase will always be eager for its return. Here is a breakdown of everything one should know regarding the eventual release of the fourth Borderlands game.

According to Game Rant, Gearbox executive Randy Pitchford strongly hinted that Borderlands 4 was coming. He tweeted the message in response to the recent film’s critical and commercial failure, saying, “We’re working extra hard four you on what’s next.” While not an explicit confirmation, he did replace the “for” in the sentence with “four,” which should be a fairly obvious hint to his intentions. Otherwise, no other details have been given on the fourth installment of this classic series.

Randy Pitchford co-founded Gearbox and currently serves as its CEO, where he oversaw the Borderlands franchise. While this news reassured many fans, the fourth game has been confirmed for several months. The original announcement came shortly after massive publisher Take-Two Interactive purchased Gearbox. However, given the length of the game development process, fans will likely have to wait a long time before they give either a trailer or release date.

The Failed Film

This announcement coincided with the release of Lionsgate’s Borderlands film that week. The film adaptation remained in development hell for over a decade and saw several rewrites. Legendary horror director Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel 2) led the film as Marvel executive Avi Arad produced the film. Despite the talent behind the film, critics and audiences completely panned it for its bizarre casting choices, bad writing, and butchering of the source material.

To many, the film’s failure disappoints them on another level. For the past few years, audiences have seen a sudden improvement in video game adaptations. Many examples, such as Sonic, The Last of Us, Fallout, and The Super Mario Bros.  Movie, proved that games could be adapted into good shows and films. However, with this film’s failure, it seems terrible video game adaptations have returned to moviegoers’ screens. Unfortunately, this may have soured the series’ reputation in anticipation of Borderlands 4.

Randy Pitchford’s Franchise

Outside of this approaching sequel and the film, Borderlands remains one of the more iconic entries in the FPS and open-world genres. The first game, released in 2009, was a surprise hit for a new IP. Essentially, the series is a Mad Max-style world of warring raiders on a relic-laden alien planet. The series features beautifully grimy cel-shaded artwork, the voice cast of Funimation, and endless open worlds to plunder. The next two games further advanced the series with their epic scope and polish for the series while adding even more lunatics to the cast, such as big bad Handsome Jack.

Outside of the main series, the franchise also gave us the well-received Telltale spinoff Tales from the Borderlands and hilarious Tiny Tina games that expanded the universe. At the very least, the film boosted publicity for the original games, which were greatly praised by fans in comparison. Hopefully, with the release of this new game, there will be no more rest for the wicked this time.
