Every year, the massively popular video game Minecraft hosts a livestream where the developers, Mojang, discuss upcoming content and updates. In Minecraft Live 2020, the 1.17 ‘Caves & Cliffs’ update was announced. Within this update, a new item called Bundles was shown. This item would revolutionize inventory management within Minecraft. However, in June of 2021 when ‘Caves & Cliffs’ dropped, the Bundle was nowhere to be found. It still existed in the game’s code, but aside from being later implemented as an experimental feature, this item was seemingly forgotten for years. Mojang is planning to change that.
The History Of ‘Caves & Cliffs’
A cave update was a popular idea within the community years before its release. With the introduction of the 1.16 ‘Nether Update’, which overhauled the entire Nether dimension with new biomes, blocks, and mobs, fans were more hopeful than ever that this change would become a reality. Finally, in Minecraft Live 2020, the Overworld overhaul was revealed as ‘Caves & Cliffs’. This update was released in two parts; the first consisted mainly of blocks and mobs, and the second was the brand-new Overworld generation. Although ‘Caves & Cliffs’ was originally supposed to be one update, Mojang had to split it into two to preserve team health and happiness during the global pandemic.
In reality, ‘Caves & Cliffs’ has spanned four updates (soon to be five). Even after both parts were released, other features shown in Minecraft Live 2020, like the Deep Dark, were further delayed to the next update, ‘The Wild Update’. Mojang’s ambitions have caused many features to be lost and forgotten, but fans still call for these abandoned showcases to be added to the game. ‘Caves & Cliffs’ has spanned further than just the two-part series, and this is further proven by the fact that the Bundle is still not a part of Vanilla Minecraft. Recently, however, Mojang has been making more strides than ever to release this feature fully into the game in the upcoming Winter update.
How Bundles Work
Bundles are Minecraft’s budget backpacks. Although they don’t hold as much as some modded backpacks, Bundles have a capacity of 64 special Bundle Slots. These slots are a brand new mechanic in Minecraft. In a nutshell: items that stack to 64 (Rotten Flesh, Sunflowers, etc) take one Bundle Slot each, items that stack to 16 (Ender Pearls, etc) take up four Slots each, and items that can only be solitary (Tools, etc) will take up all 64 Slots. To further explain, putting a sword in a Bundle will fill all 64 Bundle Slots. Placing 16 Ender Pearls into a Bundle will fill it. Finally, putting 64 sticks into a Bundle will fill it.
The main use case for this inventory management tool is when you’re exploring and picking up random items along the way. Instead of having three poppies, seven strings, and a couple of gravel blocks clogging up your inventory, you can save space by placing them all into a Bundle. The crafting recipe used to consist of six rabbit hides and two strings, but with the updated recipe being just a string and a piece of leather, Bundles are easier to craft than ever. This is miles easier than crafting the other inventory management tool, the Shulker Box, which requires the player to enter the End dimension and defeat Shulkers to obtain more inventory space.
Bundles Return In Bedrock Testing
The developers over at Mojang released a statement on August 15 announcing the return of this long-lost feature. They are working hard to implement Bundles fully into the game later this year. Currently, testing on Bedrock Edition and Java Edition are available. Testing this feature and gaining community feedback is important to ensure that this miniature backpack gets released. With hopes looking high and community hype skyrocketing due to teasers of what Minecraft 1.22 could be, now is as good a time as ever to re-enter your two-week Minecraft phase. Hopefully with the community’s support, the next update coming to the game will revitalize the franchise.
