Call of Duty Extends Double XP Event to Compensate for PSN Downtime

The Terminator Event in Call of Duty Black Ops 6 double XP

Call of Duty players were excited for the always popular double XP weekend this past weekend. For many gamers, this is the time to grind levels to acquire more weapons, gear, and much more. Unfortunately, many players had their weekend plans canceled. The PlayStation Network was out for nearly 24 hours, making it impossible for players to rake in the XP. Many fans were upset with Sony, but Treyarch, the developer of Black Ops 6, is doing its best to make it up to players. They announced today that the event will be extended to compensate for the network outage.

The double XP weekend will now end on February 12th at 10 am Pacific Standard Time, the company announced on their official X page. While the announcement didn’t directly say this was due to the PSN outage, it’s safe to say this is the reason. Players missed out on the event that encompassed all modes in the game. Warzone and Zombies players were also looking forward to getting double the drops. It isn’t just the players that missed out. Treyarch also wants to maximize these types of weekends.

When players are in the game, they are more likely to spend money. The game can suggest certain purchases, enticing players to spend a little cash to get some upgrades. This extension will likely net the company a little more money and goodwill with the players. The goodwill might be even more important.

When I worked at the Disney Store, a store two doors down from us ran a promotion that saw long lines with hours of waiting. Many parents decided to take their kids to our store instead. One company’s mistake was a boon for us. This is the same thing Treyarch is hoping happens in Call of Duty. A little goodwill can often go a long way, and the company needs it.

Cheating & Hacking Allegations

Players have continued to voice their displeasure for cheating and hacking within the game. Most recently, Warzone players have started to see some hackers using the Staff of Ice Wonder Weapon from the latest Zombies map. The weapon is great for the zombies mode but becomes extremely overpowered in other modes. Players want Treyarch to crack down harder on these rule-breakers, but the efforts have not worked so far.

In the most recent Squid Game event, these players would often show up in ranked matches, frustrating players who were trying to complete the event. It makes sense that players are frustrated. Many gamers are hopping in, looking to blow off steam after a long day. Others are trying to grind the right way, hoping to showcase their hard work for all to see. Cheaters and hackers have no place, and fans want the studio to crack down. The company hopes the extension of the event can buy them some goodwill.

Final Thoughts

There is no shortage of events going on in Call of Duty. The Terminator event is also happening right now. Players can now double up, earning double XP while also obtaining skulls for the next reward. It’s a good move by the company, considering the situation was not their fault.
