2024 is becoming an incredible year for fans of classic Capcom fighting games. On the heels of the announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics has come another collection, Capcom Fighting Collection 2. However, Capcom is once again collaborating on this collection, bringing in SNK to give us both installments of the Capcom vs. SNK Millenium duology. First released in 2000 and 2001 for arcades, they would see releases on the console generations of that time. However, neither game has been available on recent hardware for a decade. The return of these two classics signals a new era for fans of Capcom’s legendary titles.

Two Rivals United

These two fighting games featured crossovers between at-the-time rival fighting game producers at Capcom and SNK. The creator of the original Street Fighter had left Capcom to work at SNK and help them develop the Fatal Fury franchise, which then competed with the success of Street Fighter II. The two companies continuously released updates and sequels across arcades and consoles alike, trying to outdo the other in presentation. However, at the start of the millennium, they put aside grudges to release two crossover games that pit their characters against each other for the first time.

Capcom vs. SNK’s Unique Mechanics

At the time, the two fighting game companies made games that had as many differences as similarities. While both focused on 2d fighting games played from the same perspective, mechanics and flourishes were different. The first Capcom vs. SNK game sought to mimic SNK’s four-button gameplay style and made characters have varying strengths. You could make large teams of weaker characters or small teams of stronger characters, or go solo with the strongest of fighters. The second game utilized the six-button format popularized by Capcom but allowed characters to take mechanics from their home games to make them feel more like their original game.

A Bold Return for Fighting Game Fans

At the time of release, big crossovers in the fighting game world were proving incredibly successful. Capcom vs. SNK was beloved by fans of both companies and saw popularity in arcades and homes alike. However, the 2000s saw a decline in the popularity of fighting games. As the market became flush with competitor franchises, Capcom struggled to keep up in popularity and frustrated gamers with bizarre monetization choices. While Capcom and SNK seemed to still be on friendly terms, we hadn’t seen the companies collaborate in a big way again until recently. The inclusion of the legendary crossover duo in this collection is a good sign.

Final Thoughts

When Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui were announced as DLC for Street Fighter 6, fans were ecstatic that the companies were working together again. The announcement of the return of Marvel vs. Capcom additionally was met with tremendous praise. With the return of Capcom vs. SNK to modern systems, Capcom is solidifying itself as a fan-pleaser. They are working hard to overcome past grievances and give the community what it wants. If these collections do well, more collaborations could come. Is Capcom vs. SNK 3 a possibility? As of today, the chances are substantially more likely than ever before.
