The recurring trend of child video game characters is still going strong in 2024. Despite what you may believe, child video game characters aren’t a new trend in the gaming world. Indeed, you’ll find various video games with children as playable characters even in the early days of video games.
Gaming companies are far from stupid as they introduce more child video game characters to spark interest among younger audiences. These characters would be avatars, representing an audience who’d otherwise be overlooked simply because they’re not the ones with the money.

Out of everything you know about the Mario franchise, what do you know about their child characters? Considering that Nintendo has a strong fan base among children, is it really surprising that child video game characters tend to be these players’ favorite characters?
With successful baby video characters like Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, it wouldn’t be long before a baby monkey graced Donkey Kong Island. However, there is a bit of a twist with Donkey Kong’s child video game character. For instance, Donkey Kong didn’t create baby versions of their established characters, instead, they introduced an entirely new character altogether.
Donkey Kong’s “Little” Cousin
Kiddy Kong, or Dinky Kong if you’re in Japan, is one of the new child video game characters in the Mario universe that you can play in the Donkey Kong games. This character was introduced to be Dixie King’s sidekick and is playable in the following games, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble! And Donkey Kong Land 3.
Introduced as the youngest member of the Kong family, Kiddy Kong will have much to live up to if he wants to sit at the same legendary table as his older cousins. However, he may have a rival in Diddy Kong who had the poster child video game character spot previously. Only time will tell if Kiddy can reach the heights set by his big cousin, Diddy.
One “Big” Baby
Have you noticed that child video game characters tend to be weaker than their well-known counterparts? Kiddy Kong may look weak in appearance but don’t be fooled, as he’s still an ape underneath those blue pajamas.
Any experience that Kiddy may lack, he more than makes up for his weaknesses with his powerful strength and sheer size. Although Kiddy is a toddler, he’s quite tall and can easily tower over Dixie Kong. Even more impressive? He can stand at eye level with Donkey Kong too.
Don’t Judge an Ape by his Appearance
Although child video game characters are weaker than their counterparts, the littlest Kong member still packs a hard-hitting punch. For instance, Kiddy Kong’s rolling ability has two main functions that allow him to defeat various enemies and enhance his jumping ability. Likewise, using his jumping and rolling abilities together, he can travel bodies of water without swimming.
Like other child video game characters, Kiddy Kong can only use certain abilities with another character. These abilities include being able to throw Dixie around to help them reach areas or objects that aren’t in jumping range. Additionally, Kiddy can break the ground with his body to reach bonus barrels and other hidden secrets. Lastly, his rolling ability allows Dixie to ride on top of him as an apelike bulldozer.

What makes all child video game characters popular is their fun personalities. Based on his gameplay, Kiddy Kong is not an exception to this rule. Generally, you may find it cute how he chews and picks at random things around him, or you’re annoyed by his constant temper tantrums whenever he loses a fight. Either way, you should know that Kiddy Kong is intended for children and not grown Donkey Kong fans
Another popular trait of child video game characters is their struggles with accountability. Specifically, Kiddy Kong may not understand the weight of consequences, if his actions after you get a Game Over are any indication. In the following scene, Kiddy plays with toys in a crib where he’s imprisoned alongside Dixie, reflecting his obliviousness to the danger they’re in.
Donkey Kong’s Successor?
How would you raise a super-sized three-year-old ape who shares the same love for adventure as his older family members? Simply, you wouldn’t and should be happy about that. Unfortunately, the Kong family will have their hands full trying to keep Kiddy out of trouble, while players have their hands full controlling him with their only aid coming from Dixie Kong.
Overall, Kiddy Kong is one of the few child video game characters who should get more recognition. As a child video game character, Kiddy can attract more children to play the game as he’ll provide a literal banging good time. Just be aware of the Kremlings out there! Although Kiddy Kong is only a toddler, those crocodilian animals are just too wicked to care.
