Chronicon: One of My Favorite Hidden Gems

Chronicon best indie games

I am a massive fan of ARPGs. I have about 1300 hours played between Path of Exile 1 and 2, with 400 hours in Last Epoch and around 200 in Diablo IV. Chronicon is my 4th favorite ARPG over Diablo IV. I am generally not attracted to games that have pixelated art, but a friend talked me into trying Chronicon out. I was not disappointed. I sank a lot of time into my first character, and I go back to the game whenever other ARPGs are taking too long to become fresh. Here are a couple of reasons why you should try out Chronicon!

It’s Cute

The graphics are really cute! Path of Exile prides itself on beautiful and horrifying art. Last Epoch is going for a temporal aesthetic. Diablo is Diablo. Chronicon comes in with its pixel graphics and its cute little enemies and changes up the vibe of ARPGs. A lot of ARPGs are dark and, sometimes, depressing. Chronicon changes this up with its story of going back in time to save people from mistakes. The endgame is just going on adventures and trying to collect artifacts to enable your little pet. If you’re looking for an ARPG that isn’t grim and dark, try Chronicon.

It’s Fun

The gameplay loop is really interesting. The story doesn’t take too long to get through, and the enemies change. If you pay attention to the story, it’s pretty chill. You’re a hero saving people throughout time. Every class has 3 different subclasses, and all of them have a lot of builds. I’m sure that there are some build guides and meta lists for Chronicon, but I’ve never used any. I just click the stuff that looks cool and see how it goes. I’ve not disappointed myself yet. If you’re looking for a fun, relaxing ARPG, try Chronicon.

It’s Shockingly In Depth

Each class has 3 subclasses, and you are able to allocate any number of passive skills you want into each subclass. Certain passive skills in different subclasses synergize with each other, too. So, there’s a lot to think about when you’re building your character! This gets more and more complicated as you progress through the game, where you start having to craft gems and insert them into your gear. There are also legendary unique items with wild abilities that can completely change your build! If you are looking for an ARPG with endless build depth, try Chronicon.

Give it a Try!

The game is only $14 on Steam without the DLC. The DLC is a super endgame mechanic anyway, so it isn’t necessary. The progression in Chronicon is endless. Your character will always have somewhere to go in its progression. My first character was a Nova Warlock build whose objective was to cause chain reactions on top of explosions. My second character was a menagerie minion build on Ranger. It’s fun, it’s a great time. The story does not take long to complete, and it has endless progression end game.
