One of the greatest joys of PC gaming is the wonderful world of mods. From the smallest texture change to massive overhauls, fans work tirelessly for the games they love. Certain games, like Paradox’s Crusader Kings 3, are built with the modding community in mind. This has brought us the incredible Game of Thrones mod for CK3. This takes a game about medieval dynasties, marriages, wars, and succession and transplants it onto the world of Westeros. Such an arduous task takes time, so the mod updates periodically with new features. The most recent update has finally added dragons, so let’s dive into the epic new additions that come along with that!
The Dance is Real
The biggest reason that people have been so expectant of the addition of dragons is to allow scenarios from the original stories to be possible. The Game of Thrones mod allows players to jump to different points in the fictional history of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. They can play as different rulers, from the lowest lord to a mighty king. However, one of the most important parts of many of these stories is the use of dragons.
The Targaryen family conquered Westeros with them and wielded them for over a century of their rule. With dragons now in place, scenarios like the Dance of Dragons can play out. As the screenshot shows, however, this is not limited to purely canon events!
The Beauty of Sandbox
The greatest feature of CK3 is the sandbox element. History is changeable within this game, from the moment you start playing it. Characters who lived a long time can die young, and vice versa. Within the Game of Thrones mod, this feature is transplanted onto George RR Martin’s carefully written histories. Wars like the Dance of the Dragons can happen dynamically, but now with potentially different participants! The ability for characters within the mod to tame dragons grants them access to new ways to make claims on the throne. The most insignificant peasant could tame a dragon and prove a threat to your rule. The story possibilities are truly endless.
Dragon Mechanics
The Game of Thrones mod has so carefully worked on including dragons, and the amount of features showcases this. Dragons are represented in full 3d as characters, and they interact with those around them. Being a dragon rider grants the player multiple benefits during wartime, representing the destructive power dragons brought to the wars of ASOIAF’s history. Characters can ride their dragons to events or just to lose some stress. Complicated mechanics are built around the hatching of eggs and the taming of dragons. Custom rules exist to allow you to decide who can get access to dragons. This truly is a labor of love from the mod’s developers.
Final Thoughts
Crusader Kings 3 can seem daunting to outsiders, but it is one of the best simulation games of medieval history. Its mechanics are a perfect match for the ASOIAF universe, which the Game of Thrones mod makers took full advantage of. If you love Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, or especially if you love the ASOIAF books they are based on, this is an excellent use of your gaming time.
You can explore the turbulent times of the Targaryen family’s rule, or fast-forward to Robert’s Rebellion. The mod is still in active development, so more and more features will come in the next several years. With the dragon update here, however, there’s never been a better time to give the mod a try.
