Clair Obscur is a brand-new Turn-Based RPG that innovates the genre by introducing real-time mechanics. It is being developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive. Recently, the first gameplay preview for the game was released and it featured some extremely innovative mechanics. Fans are extremely excited for the game’s release in 2025. It will be released on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X and S. Here is everything that was shown in the gameplay preview.
Setting & Story
The story follows the protagonist Gustav, who, along with his Mage companion Luna and other members, explores a beautifully crafted world inspired by Belle Epoque France. This group of members forms Expedition 33. This twisted world is cursed by The Paintress, who wakes up every year and paints a number on her Monolith. Everyone who has the age of that number is wiped from existence. Players must lead Expedition 33 on the quest to destroy The Paintress so she may never paint death again.
Innovative Turn-Based Combat
Turn-based RPG allows players to utilize different strategies and tactics to attack the enemy. Players take turns in combats and usually play with different characters throughout their journey. Turn-based combat is not attractive to everyone as it is characterized by a much slower pace of combat as well as negligible real-time action. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 changes all the and brings a new concept to what Turn-Based RPGs can be. The game changes the genre from a sequence of attacks and waiting to a much more thrilling, fast-paced action that involves the player much more.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is inspired by the Soulslike games, especially Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, to add many more skill-based elements to the genre. This is implemented thanks to the addition of Quick Time events at every turn whether it be during offense or defense. Each turn will require the player to have a quick reflex whether it be pressing a specific button in a limited time or simply aiming the weapon.
The other way in which this game differs from the rest of the genre is that it does not allow the enemies to simply attack and demolish the player while he simply watches. This game offers a variety of counterplay by providing options like jumping, dodging, deflecting, and parrying enemy attacks. The concept of Perfect Parrying is also present, which when done allows the player to follow up with a strong counterattack.
Gameplay Loop
Each of the members of Expedition 33 comes with their own unique set of abilities. Along with that, there is a progression system for each member of the team allowing players to level up a member’s stat as well as unlock new abilities. The game follows a menu-driven interface allowing players to choose from a variety of attacks. Each attack costs Action Points which increase with turns. Parries also refund these points therefore incentivizing Defense to perform Perfect Parries.
