The Last of Us and Resident Evil: Comparing Enemies

The Last of Us and Resident Evil both have a good amount in common. Both series have incredibly beloved and iconic main characters. Each series has zombie-like enemies that the survivalist main characters must overcome and defeat. Specifically focusing on those enemies, let’s dive in and compare and contrast the baddies in both game series.

The Last of Us- Clickers, Runners, Spores

In the world of the Last of Us, the zombie-like enemies are derived from a mushroom infection that overtakes the host’s brain. The infected in these games have multiple classifications. Runners are the most basic. Runners are not fully infected all the way, so they resemble humans a bit. These guys are the easiest to kill, with basic weapons, or even bare hands. Next up are the true infected. Clickers and stalkers have overgrown parasites on their bodies, and have great hearing. Stalkers chase the player quietly, while Clickers use echolocation to track.

The Last of Us is truly a frightening world. Next up are Shamblers and Bloaters. These enemy types are more beefed up. Shamblers give off a toxic, poisonous gas. They are pretty frustrating to fight since the player is very easily stunned by them. Bloaters are armored up, and can take a lot of punishment. In the first Last of Us game, they are essentially a miniboss. And a tough one at that. Lastly, the Rat King. This horrific abomination is a combination of the other types of infected all thrown into one nasty nightmare of a monster. It’s hell to fight, and even creepier to think about. Safe to say, Naughty Dog really went all out designing the enemies in The Last of Us.

Resident Evil- One Word: Biohazards

Comparatively, the enemies in Resident Evil are much more varied, and fantastical. This is due to the long-running nature of the series, and how it’s been around for close to thirty years. Resident Evil is also a lot more cheesy and bombastic than The Last of Us, which is no problem at all. Zombies are always the starting enemy in these games. They are typically derived from some kind of virus. Whether it’s the t-virus, the g-virus, or any other strains of said virus. Zombies are the least of Resident Evil’s concerns. These viruses give way to dozens of other kinds of enemies that give The Last of Us a run for its money.

There are the Hunters, scaly, sharp-clawed behemoths that can one-shot the player from the first game. Comparatively in Resident Evil 2, there are the famous Clickers and all kinds of different variations of the monster-formed virus. There are giant spiders, giant killer plants, giant snakes, and even infected canines. In the later games, the infections turn ludicrous, and there are even full-on werewolves, vampires, and all kinds of fantasy monsters one could imagine. Like mentioned earlier, the series really takes a dive off the deep end once the games start to get more and more down the lore rabbit hole.

The Last of Us v Resident Evil

So how do these series compare overall? Well, it’s easy to say that The Last of Us’s universe is more concerned with telling a relatively grounded story. There are only a handful of different infected types, and they aren’t all that fantastical. The Last of Us as a series is more so focused on telling a human, emotional story about surviving in the apocalypse. That’s the main goal of that series.

Resident Evil on the other hand is not trying to be grounded at all. It may have started in the first game, but eventually, the monsters and enemy types just became purely fantasy. And that’s no issue, since it really works with the game’s cheesy and campy tone. Is one better than the other? Of course not, it’s really all up to what the player prefers. Resident Evil is very campy and cheesy with some great scares and exciting moments. The Last of Us is more serious and focused on telling a mature story. Both do their own things very well. Why not enjoy both of them?
