Complete Guide to Big the Cat from Sonic

Big the Cat

Big the Cat is a whimsical character in the Sonic series. He’s been a fisherman, an ally to Team Rose, and Sonic’s supporting cast. This stout feline has held a contentious reputation within the Sonic fandom. Big earned the fan’s hatred in his first appearance due to his flawed minigames. Since then, opinions on the character are diverse. Read on as we dive into the carefree feline and his froggy fishing adventures.

Big the Cat first debuts in Sonic Adventure, released in 1998 on the Sega Dreamcast. Big the Cat was one of two newcomers alongside E-102 Gamma. This feline is a relaxing character, going against the franchise’s intense combat style. Big focused on fishing minigames to find his partner, a miniature frog named Froggy. Froggy is integral to the story’s main plot due to swallowing Big’s lucky charm, a yellow chaos emerald. Eggman’s hunt for the chaos emeralds results in Froggy getting captured. Because of this, Big the Cat helps foil Eggman’s latest scheme and defeat Perfect Chaos.

Big’s second appearance is in Sonic Heroes, released in 2003. Heroes’ storyline focused on different team setups between Sonic’s diverse cast. Because of this, the storyline is between Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose, and Team Chaotix. Big is on Team Rose, which includes Amy Rose and Cream the Rabbit. The three of them go on a journey to retrieve Froggy and Chocola, one of Cream’s Chao partners. The storyline’s main antagonist is Metal Sonic, who has upgraded his body to prove himself superior to Sonic. Big acts as a ‘power’ archetype, breaking objects and riding gusts of air.

Big’s Minigame

Big has held a divisive reputation within the Sonic fandom for years. Many people cited Big’s minigames as being tedious for the story. Big’s minigames require you to fish for Froggy and catch him. The minigame stretches over many stages. These include zones like Mystic Ruins or the Egg Fleet. The sudden gameplay change from Sonic’s high speed is a jarring transition. Players have to play Big’s game because it is the only way to finish the rest of the story. Big the Cat is not a bad character, but over the years, fans have crowned him as Sonic’s worst because of the minigame.

What Big’s fishing game showcases, though, is an opportunity for relaxation. It is a sudden gameplay from the high-intensity gameplay. You play as Big to get away from Sonic’s more intense moments. Big represents this through his tranquil personality. He is a carefree person who prefers quiet because it brings him joy. Despite his relaxed nature, Big is good friends with Sonic and his friends. He prefers the quiet over going on wild adventures. Big has no worries, and his minigame offers the players rest from the game’s chaotic elements.

Big’s Comeback

The sudden interest in Big comes from nostalgia. Nostalgia is a powerful force that brings elements like Big to the forefront. Many people who grew up with the Adventure Games still love them. Due to this, Big the Cat’s reputation has improved over the years, and he has gained a modern following. Because of this, he’s not quite the most ‘hated’ Sonic character in the series.

Big has been making a subtle comeback over the last few years. This cat has appeared in mobile games like Sonic Sonic Speed Simulator and Sonic Forces Speed Battle. Big shows up in 2019’s Team Sonic Racing, once more a part of Team Rose. A digital variant of Big the Cat appears in 2022’s Sonic Frontiers, acting as shop owner. More than that, Big’s minigame returns, as Sonic can fish with him using purple tokens. Overall, Big was disliked at first but has slowly gained traction. The future looks bright for our purple fuzzy friend and his froggy.
