Concord Holds On to 2024 Collegiate Rocket League Points Lead

Collegiate Rocket League

Despite an outstanding showing from the underdog team from the University of Akron, Concord University sits atop the points standings for the second week in a row with three of four Collegiate Rocket League open tournaments now complete. Here’s the latest recap of all the happenings of this tournament.

An Unexpected Performance

The University of Akron Esports Blue team played well enough in the first and second open tournaments to finish in the top 10 and accumulate a total of six Collegiate Rocket League series points, but no one expected them to catch fire the way they did in the third tournament.

The team started in the upper bracket of pool one and easily defeated Oklahoma Christian University 2-0. From there they faced off against Lubbock Christian University’s Blue team. That match went 3-1 in Akron’s favor, giving the team a ticket to day two. LCU had defeated series leaders Concord in round 1 of the upper bracket and the teams would face each other again in day one’s lower bracket final. That match would go to Concord by a score of 3-0.

Maryville Takes Pool Two

Maryville University, which had won the first open tournament, ruled the upper bracket in pool two, defeating Harrisburg 2-0 in round one and Davenport University’s Black team 3-1 in round two.  Davenport would move to the lower bracket where they would end the tournament for a St. Clair Gold team that was looking very dominant. Before falling to Davenport in the lower bracket final, the team had beaten Northeastern, Harrisburg, and Columbia College all by scores of 2-0. The St. Clair Gold team currently has 2 points and is tied for 12th place in the Collegiate Rocket League standings.

Northwood Returns to Form

Reigning Collegiate Rocket League champions Northwood University showed that they are still contenders after a disappointing finish in last week’s second open tournament. Playing in the pool three upper bracket, the team picked off Mizzou 2-0 in the opening round and blanked Fisher College 3-0 to take the ticket to day two.

Fisher, who missed the second open tournament, was looking to place well and get back into the series points race. After losing to Northwood and getting bumped to the lower bracket, the team defeated Mizzou 3-0 and avoided being sent home empty-handed.

Pool Four Teams Hold On

Pool four was home to several teams looking to make it to the Collegiate Rocket League championships. To get there teams must be one of the top eight terms in the point standings after the four open tournaments. This week, West Virginia (fourth in points coming into the week) took the pool four upper bracket and Illinois State University (12th in the standings) won the lower bracket. West Virginia defeated Illinois and Brewton-Parker College while Illinois battled back from its first-round loss to beat St. Edwards University, Stockton, and BPC to stay alive for day two.

Akron Goes All the Way

Round one of the upper bracket saw Akron defeat West Virginia and Northwood best Maryville, setting up an Akron/Northwood final. No one expected the best-of-five match to go the distance, let alone see Akron come out on top 3-2.

With Akron secure in its spot for the grand finale, Northwood was sent to the lower bracket final to await their next opponent. The lower bracket’s first round had seen Concord eliminate Illinois while Fisher sent Davenport home. In round two, Concord ended the tournament for Maryville while Fisher continued to push forward, defeating West Virginia 3-2. The semifinal best of five also went to five games with Concord keeping their hopes of back-to-back open tournament titles alive. Those hopes were dashed, however, when they fell to Northwood 3-1 in the lower bracket final.

Northwood’s lower bracket victory gave them a chance at redemption and they didn’t hold back, winning the first best-of-seven match in five games. Now that each team had a single loss on the day, it all came down to the final best-of-seven match. Akron proved they would not be intimidated and eventually took the match four games to three, giving them the tournament win and the 16 points that went with it. The victory marked the first time in three years that Akron had won a Collegiate Rocket League main event.

Collegiate Rocket League Standings

With a new total of 22 series points, Akron moved up an astounding six places in the standings to third, placing them just ahead of Maryville who have 21 points. Northwood’s second-place finish was good 12 points, giving them a total of 28 and second place in the standings.

Despite finishing third this week, Concord held on to the top spot with 31 total series points. One final shake-up in the leaderboard came when Fisher College was penalized 9 points for an unauthorized roster change. As a result, Fisher now has a total of 6 points and drops from sixth place overall to ninth.
