Concord Developers Hint at Return for Failed 2024 Title

Concord Falling Cinematic

Concord is a hero shooter developed by Firewalk Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. After being in development for almost 8 years and having a budget of over $100 million, a beta was finally released on August 23, 2024. However, it quickly flopped with Steam numbers not even hitting the peak of 700 concurrent players. Following the game’s failure, the game server went offline on September 6, and everyone who bought the game was given a refund.

On September 3, 2024, the Game Director of Concord Ryan Ellis released a statement on the official PlayStation Blog. He mentioned that while some aspects of the game resonated with the player base, they are aware of the feedback the community has provided. He added that the launch and other elements of the game were not according to the high expectations. Therefore, the game servers will go offline beginning September 6 and the studio will explore other options that will please the playerbase.

He further added that the game will be pulled from every game store effective immediately and everyone who bought this game will get a full refund. The interesting thing about the blog was that Ryan mentioned that they are determining the best path ahead for the game. This seems to indicate that this failed title can make a return sometime in the future. Lastly, he said that they will keep the players updated if any development happens.

Possible Return Scenarios

The real question that now arises is how Concord can make a return. The first obvious solution that comes to everyone’s mind is to make the game free to play. Previously it was available to purchase on PC and PlayStation 5 for 40 dollars. This hurt the launch of the game as players will not be willing to spend dollars for a game in a genre that already has fantastic games. Making it free to play will allow players to give the game a chance.

From a financial perspective, in-game monetization and skins remain an option if the game is made free to play. All free-to-play games, especially hero shooters, thrive from their in-game cosmetic purchases. From a gameplay perspective, Concord feels sluggish. A complete overhaul of the gunplay and movement will greatly benefit the game. Making the weapons feel effective as well as keeping the combat fast-paced will keep the players interested.

Another problem that the game faced was its character’s designs. Every character feels like it has no personality and is not attractive at all. This is especially bad for a hero shooter as the heroes in the game must resonate with the players. An overhaul of the character designs which is focused on making them interesting instead of diverse will greatly benefit the game. These are all options for Firewalk to explore while the game is offline.
