Concord was reported to be in development for about 8 years and a beta was finally released on 23 August 2024. However, the game was a massive flop and was able to sell only about 25000 copies. Many people are labeling it as one of the biggest flops in the video game industry. It is no doubt however that this game developed by Firewalk Studios and published by PlayStation is PlayStation’s biggest failure. Today, Sony has officially released a statement and is bringing the servers offline.
Concord’s Core Issues
Gameplay
Concord is a team-based Hero action shooter similar to Overwatch and launched with a decent roster of characters. However, the gameplay is found to be extremely dull to play. For a hero shooter, the gunplay feels slow, clunk, and feels more like a tactical shooter. The movement even when combined with special abilities does not feel exciting at all. None of the hero’s abilities are fun to use and give that feeling of satisfaction when a player successfully utilizes it.
The gunplay is also held back because they deal extremely low damage. A player needs to have perfect aim during the entirety of the magazine to kill an opponent. This puts players at an extreme disadvantage when they are in a 1v2 situation. The lack of movement options and weapons feeling underwhelming there is an extremely low chance that a player will make it out of a 1v2 alive no matter what the skill level. Provided, Concord is in the Beta state but the balancing is very off.
Issues with Character Design
For a game that has been in development for 8 years, Concord was expected to have an exciting roster of heroes. Unfortunately, it is the complete opposite. It is clear from all the characters that are present that the design is extremely woke. The main issue however arises, that none of the characters has an attractive personality or have depth to their character.
The character design is extremely unappealing. The lack of focus on character depth and personality and much more focus on pronouns makes this roster one of the worst in any hero shooter. It is also bad for further in-game monetization as no one will want to spend their money on a skin for a character that is unappealing.
Hardware Performance Issues
Aside from the gameplay perspective, Concord also suffers from a lot of technical issues as well. There have been reports of the game crashing a lot on PC with some crashes taking place 10 seconds after the game is launched from the Steam library. For online multiplayer, this is especially bad as such fatal crashes during the middle of a game can be devastating.
Sony’s Response
On Sept. 3rd, a few days after the Concord release, Sony announced the game’s servers will be pulled offline on Sept. 6th. Game director Ryan Ellis stated that while many of the game components were well received, the rest of the game performed poorly. In return, any player who purchased the game will receive a complete refund. Ryan was also hopeful that the team would explore other options and hopefully release a product that excites the players. Yet even Firewalk Studios could not deny the failure of their ambitious shooter.
