Dead by Daylight’s 8th Anniversary: Twisted Masquerade Review

Dead by Daylight’s 8th Anniversary Twisted Masquerade event is almost over. In it, Killer and Survivor are thrust into trials run by Lady ZZL. Strewn throughout each map is an invitation. When an invitation is active, Survivors can move around the map quietly, block killers from being able to vault, or create fragile pallets that break when used. Killers can block Survivors from vaulting, break doors, and pallets, and have access to remote hooks.

After the success of the Chaos Shuffle, hopes were high for Dead by Daylight’s 8th Anniversary. Were those expectations met? Was the Twisted Masquerade Event gala the life of the party or did it fizzle before the festivities could begin?

As stated in the title, the anniversary event is the Twisted Masquerade. Lady ZZL Tryks has created masks and costumes for survivors and killers. Known as “The Mad Designer,” Tryks made ballroom masks for killers and survivors so each could look the part during this Twisted Masquerade.

Players are to complete simple tasks within the event time to earn the currency needed to purchase said masks. Completing all three tomes unlocks special costumes for William “Bill” Overbeck and The Unknown. Masks and costumes from previous events are purchasable in the Store. The masks were well-designed with The Doctor, The Clown, Detective Tapp, and Yun-Jin having the best of the bunch. The Unknown’s unlockable costume is creepy. Sadly, The Pig received a lovely costume but the ten-dollar price tag may be steep for some gamers.

The basement received a little change with a body covered in a drape resting in a chair and portraits made by Lady Tryks. Father Campbell’s Chapel received some changes to look like a raucous party occurred. The changes were great. It’s just a shame that Father’s Chapel wasn’t seen more during the event.

Tryks Tricks in Twisted Masquerade

Lady ZZL Tryks is an ever-present force throughout the Twisted Masquerade. She brings a new mechanic to the trial with her Bag of Tryks. Every trial starts with one of nine Bag of Tryks. When players complete two main objectives (hooking a survivor or repairing a generator), the Bag of Tryks is changed. Some of these modifiers forced players to change their plans. Survivors might be more careful knowing the killer has lost terror radius. A killer might more easily lose survivors since scratch marks may disappear.

This was a welcome change to the gameplay norm. The only problem is many of the Tryks either felt inconsequential or problematic. 30% speed to every character for sixty seconds? Even as the killer, that felt more hectic than it needed to be. The Party Chests and Peekaboo Tryks were the only ones that felt fun. The Party Chests made every chest offer special items and Peekaboo allowed a character to see the auras of the opposition.

Remote Hooks?

Who thought it was a good idea to give killers remote hooks? For the uninitiated, the goal of killers is to put survivors in a dying state. While a survivor is dying, the killer can pick up survivors and place the survivors on hooks. If a survivor is hooked three times, he or she dies. Remote hooks streamline the process by allowing killers to hook survivors automatically as long as an invitation is active. Why was this a bad idea?

Dead by Daylight is a game of pressure. Survivors pressure the killers through lengthy chases and generator repair. Even if a survivor is downed, there are means to rescue teammates from being hooked. As more generators are repaired, more pressure is placed on the killer. Killers, in turn, place pressure on survivors by hooking survivors and damaging generators. Remote hooks hinder the survivors’ ability to pressure the killer. With the press of a button, a killer can immediately hook someone with survivors having no ability to save.

Now, killers do not have to worry about flashlights, pallets, or flashbang saves. Survivors can no longer wiggle free. This takes away a lot of pressure from killers and adds most of it to the survivors. This would be the same as if DBD allowed survivors to repair generators remotely. It would put Survivors at an unfair advantage and no one wants that.

Speaking of the hooks, the event had many bugs that seemed to revolve around this mechanic. If survivors were to blind a killer somehow, the survivor who blinded the killer would automatically be transferred to a hook and die immediately. A survivor with Decisive Strike might get stuck ragdolled over the killer unable to play the game.

Conclusion

The previous event, Chaos Shuffle, was a joy to play. This has not been. While not every event has to be great, it is disappointing to see an important event like Dead by Daylight’s 8th Anniversary feel like a dud. The new skins, Lady Tryks, and her Bag of Tryks are great but the bugs and advantages given to killers drag the event down. The next planned competition will be two killers vs eight survivors. Hopefully, BHVR will learn from the mistakes of this event to make that one much better.

Dead by Daylight’s 8th Anniversary Event ends July 4th.
