Dead Rising is making its return with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster (DRDR). The franchise has not been seen since the poor sales of 2016’s Dead Rising 4. While a sequel was in the works, Capcom decided to shelve the series for some time. Rather than making a new title Capcom opted to revamp the original and has promised new and exciting quality-of-life changes. These changes should take an already amazing game up to the next level.
What is Dead Rising?
Dead Rising could be summed up as an homage to George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. You take the role of Frank West, a reporter who gets a tip of something going down at Willamette, CO. Is there anyone better to send? He’s covered wars, of course. West is horrified to see zombies surrounding a large shopping mall in Willamette.
This journey sees West taking on zombies, cultists, crazed humans, and even the U.S. military to find out what has caused this outbreak. He must journey through the mall using frying pans, guns, trash cans, and whatever else he can use as a weapon. Frank must rescue those who have not been turned into zombie food.
What Quality of Life Changes are coming?
Autosave might be one of the most exciting changes coming to the remaster. In-game bathrooms were used for more than washing Frank West’s hands after disposing of zombies. The only way one could save their game was by going to one of a few bathrooms in the mall. Saving your game was inconvenient as you would have to look for the nearest bathroom which might have been on the other side of the mall. Autosave rescues gamers from that.
Hopefully, autosave is allowed in Infinite Mode as well. Players were forced to leave their consoles running for fourteen-plus hours to unlock certain achievements and in-game rewards. This was problematic. This means gamers could step away from Dead Rising for some time and load Infinite Mode to get those achievements.
Frank West Can Stay Mobile
Frank West is now able to move while aiming. Why is this important? West must use his camera or a gun to take a shot. Originally, this meant the protagonist was completely still until the player stopped aiming. Then, either West got his shot or took damage. An example is when he faced off against three snipers in one mall wing. West would need to stop, aim, and hope he could fire before one of the three snipers could pull the trigger. This change should keep players from taking unnecessary damage.
Graphics have also received an overhaul. Everything will be displayed in next-gen graphics. Dead Rising will feature 4K graphics running at a smooth 60fps thanks to the RE Engine. Controls are being revamped while trying to continue the exaggerated animations found in-game.
Art Director Satoshi Takamatsu stated, “For character animations, we tried to limit unnecessary changes and use the original data as much as possible, especially during action scenes. We could’ve made them more realistic with today’s tools, but we wanted to preserve the unique and comical moments that made the original Dead Rising so special,” during the presentation.
Capcom has been on a roll with remasters lately. Resident Evil, Ace Attorney, and Mega Man Battle Network have all seen solid remakes. Fans are looking forward to the Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection as well. If this remake is anything like the original Dead Rising, Capcom will have released something worthy of being back from the dead.
Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is coming to PS5, Steam X-Box Series X/S on Digital on September 19th. Physical copies will be available in November 2024.
