Deadlock is a game of swift and heavy combat, so Kelvin’s value comes in the form of slowing this game down with his ice-themed abilities. Kelvin is a great pick for new players; he is fun and relatively easy to play, even though he is not in the current meta-picks. Kelvin is mainly a support hero, but he provides healing, movement buffs, and crowd control, which can be built to carry if needed. The following guide is going to go through the abilities of Kelvin, the best build, and some important gameplay tips.
Kelvin’s Skills in Deadlock
Kelvin has three major skills and one ultimate, which serve different purposes, including:
- Frost Grenade: Kelvin throws a grenade that creates a freezing explosion damaging and slowing all the enemies within reach. The range is great, and it can be jump-thrown without affecting the distance.
- Ice Path: An ability that creates a path of ice that Kelvin and his teammates can walk on; gives a slight movement speed bonus. With this, directional movement with good access to high vantage points is enabled. Kelvin receives heavy resistance to slow when on the Ice Path. The problem is that this path is destructible and each block could be destroyed with only a few bullets.
- Arctic Beam: Kelvin projects a beam that deals damage, reduces the movement speed of, and fires the rate of fire of an enemy for as long as it hits them.
- Frozen Shelter (Ultimate): Kelvin creates a dome-shaped barrier that heals allies within while significantly slowing enemies. The barrier is transparent and impenetrable, offering protection as well as crowd control. You can use his ultimate offense in Deadlock to trap unsuspecting enemy players and take them down on the inside. Sometimes it’s good to wait for another friendly player to be with you inside the dome so you make sure to get the takedown.
Kelvin has a projectile-based minigun with a 15-round magazine. Although the listed weapon fires projectiles, the shots travel so fast that it feels like a hit-scan weapon at close to mid-range. Damage falls off with distance, however. Prioritize Frost Grenade and Arctic Beam. These 2 abilities can help you in damaging and controlling more effectively. Consider taking Ice Path after a few levels are placed into the other abilities, but if you’re doing good and want to help other lanes, take this earlier. This ability also provides a quick way out of pressure.
Early-Game Items
Follow the picture to help guide you on what items to purchase during different phases of the game. The priority is to grab Infuser first. It’s an active item that will boost your damage on activation. Use it right before activating your Arctic Beam to give you life for sustainment early in the game. Enduring Spirit will help with lifestyle as well while using spirit damage skills. Buy Mystic Reach to increase your abilities range and Extra Spirit for more damage with skills. Hollow Point rounds will give you more damage with your weapon when you are above 60 percent hit points. It will also give you some spirit shielding and spirit power for more damage.
Next, you will want Sprint Boots to help you get around the map faster. Pick up Mystic Vulnerability to lower your opponent’s spirit resistance. Slowing Hex will help you keep enemies slowed even when your Arctic Beam is on cooldown. Use Fleetfoot to remove the movement penalty while you shoot your gun. Apply Enduring Speed for more movement capability. You can also grab Bullet Armor or Spirit Armor depending on what kind of team you are up against.
Mid-Game Items
Even though some of these are expensive items you will want these as fast as possible to increase your Arctic Beams damage to the max. Get Improved Spirit, Boundless Spirit, and Escalating Exposure to maximize your DPS. You will receive some defense as well as health from these items. These three items are probably some of the best for maximizing your spirit damage in Deadlock. You can start picking up some of the later game items after that. Purchase Improved Burst and Improved Reach and place it on your Arctic Blast first.
Late-Game Items
Kelvin is getting Improved Bullet Armor or Improved Spirit Armor first for defense and then getting Spirit Lifesteal for long engagement sustain. Mystic Shot and Pristine Emblem can help your weapon damage if needed. Rapid Recharge, Superior Cooldown, and Superior Duration can be used if you can fit them in. Optional end-game items are Debuff Remover for getting out of crowd control effects, Metal Skin for bullet and melee immunity, and Ethereal Shift to become invulnerable for a short period but you cannot move. If you need even more survivability at the end then pickup Leech for a ton more lifesteal.
