Since its release in 2011, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been among the most acclaimed Western RPGs ever. It has also inspired a dedicated fanbase. One of the celebrities the game spawned was the iconic “Skyrim Grandma” Shirley Curry, who built a successful YouTube career off the game.
However, after nine years, her career has come to an end. Shirley announced on her YouTube channel that she would retire from producing gaming content. However, this won’t end her work on the site altogether, as she has more planned for her devoted fans. Here is a breakdown of Skyrim Grandma’s retirement.
Shirley Curry Retires at 88
Recently, Shirley Curry, known colloquially as “Skyrim Grandma”, posted an important update on her YouTube channel. She announced that after nine years, she would retire from producing further video game content. In the interview, she stated, “I’m just doing it for fun, and it isn’t fun anymore.” As such, she chose to cease gaming content for the series.
In response, her followers gave out love, gratitude, and good wishes for the 88-year-old’s future. Despite her retirement from gaming, she wouldn’t leave the site altogether. She confirmed that she would occasionally post vlogs and other updates to her channel in the future, as she has done. Additionally, she even hinted at writing a book about her experiences.
Skyrim Grandma: A Celebrity
For those unaware, Shirley Curry is one of the many novelty celebrities from the silver age of YouTube. As her title implies, she is a grandmother who played through the 2011 hit The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Her channel started with simple let’s play the game and its endless content before she moved on to other forms of content surrounding the channel.
Since she began the channel, she has amassed a large following of over a million subscribers. Her channel received praise for her charming personality, and she broke the stereotype that older generations cannot enjoy video games. Skyrim Grandma has even earned praise from the game’s developers, Bethesda Softworks.
While Skyrim was her claim to fame, she moved on to other titles on her channel. Naturally, Shirley has done let’s plays of other Bethesda titles such as Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout. She produced over two thousand videos and amassed thirty million views. Furthermore, she runs several other sites, such as a personal blog and a Christian blog for Biblical discussions.
The Impact of the Game
While there have been many hit games over the years, Skyrim remains one of the most ubiquitously successful titles that has stood the test of time. The game received critical acclaim for its vast world, endless content, and beautiful art direction. At the time of writing, the game sold over 60 million copies.
Additionally, the game inspired a robust online community. The game spawned many iconic memes, such as “Fus Roh Dah” and “Arrow to the Knee,” along with hundreds of parody skits and animations. Furthermore, the game’s engine lends itself to a strong modding community that has created entire games and remains strong today. Skyrim Grandma was just one of many celebrities spawned.
In 2018, Bethesda finally announced the upcoming Elder Scrolls VI. Despite giving gamers a brief glimpse, virtually no other information has arrived over the past few years. Given the success of Skyrim, the next entry in the series will have a near-impossible level of expectations behind it.
