Destiny 2 Lightfall was one of the lowest moments for Bungie and the franchise. Destiny is the main source of revenue for Bungie and it was funding their development process on Marathon. Bungie was also acquired by Sony in 2022 for 3.6 Billion dollars. The leadership at Bungie promised Sony some high profits from Lightfall and The Final Shape expansions.

However, Lightfall dropped and it was one of the worst expansions in the franchise’s history. It brought a lot of new quality-of-life updates but the gameplay and content remained the same. The story also took a massive hit and fans had little hope for The Final Shape. This resulted in Bungie laying off 100+ members in 2023. The future seemed bleak and on June 4, 2024, The Final Shape was released.

The Final Shape blew all expectations and quickly became the best expansion that Destiny 2 has ever released. However, the damage done due to Lightfall was so severe that the success of The Final Shape could not resolve the issues between Sony and Bungie. This resulted in the CEO of Bungie, Pete Parson announcing in August of 2024 that they will be laying off 220 employees which is approximately 17 percent of the company.

The layoffs had fans concerned about the future of Bungie with insider sources confirming that multiple projects have been shelved. However, a new leak has surfaced from an insider called Kurakasis. He has had a good track record of sharing inside information about different video game releases. He took to X and stated that despite the layoffs and project cancellations, a Destiny mobile project is being worked on by Bungie and is called ‘Destiny Rising’.

This mobile game is according to him being developed by Bungie and NetEase. NetEase is a Chinese gaming company and was also one of the first companies to support Bungie after its split with Activision in 2017. This is also not the first time a mobile game set in the Destiny universe has been rumored. Kurakasis has emphasized that this project is without a doubt, in active development. Fans have mixed reactions to this new with most disappointed that the future of Destiny is merely a mobile game. However, all of this is not official and must be taken with a grain of salt.
