Devil May Cry or God of War: Choosing Epic Action Hits

God of War and Devil May Cry are action game icons in the gaming landscape. They both were released within the same time frame and have evolved in ways unique to their series. God of War made a much more drastic change, going from something similar to DMC to something more similar to The Last of Us. Both series are alive and well now, but which one should a modern-day gamer pick up? Let’s go through both series.

God of War’s Mythology

God of War is a series that is ingrained into modern gaming. It originally came out in 2005, and it was a brutally violent Greek mythology-inspired action game. What many people forget is how many puzzles were in these original games. The PS2 God of War games had tons of bloody action, but also tons of puzzles that for some players, got quite frustrating. The style of God of War remained the same, that was until the 2018 reboot. This game introduced a new playstyle, a new Norse-inspired world, and even a new cast of characters for Kratos to interact with. This game did gangbusters as well.

Many people loved the new, intimate look into Kratos’ character this game provided. What this game did do was change the play style. The old God of War games, developed by Santa Monica Studios in California, had fixed cameras and wide action shots. These new games have a camera that looks like it was taken from a Naughty Dog game. These new games are incredibly story-driven too. They have combat in them, but the main focus here is the story they’re telling in the new, Norse mythology-inspired world. The latest release in the series was God of War Ragnarok, which came out in the fall of 2022.

Devil May Cry on the other hand is a much different franchise. From both games’ inception, they shared a lot. The first Devil May Cry came out back in 2001, so the series does pre-date God of War. DMC has always been about one thing, and that is stylish action. The games rank the player based on how well they can stylishly kill enemies. It’s the whole point of the series, as well as the main characters.

The most recent game in the series, Devil May Cry 5, was released back in 2019. It still is one of, if not the most popular entry in the franchise. The game has three playable characters, Nero, V, and Dante. All three of these guys can kill demons in a stylish, braggadocious way. In DLC and later versions of the game, Vergil, Dante’s brother, is also a new playable character. Devil May Cry is the go-to game for players who want a challenging yet expressive combat system. The mechanics and depth in these games, especially the fifth one, are out of this world.

DMC or GoW

With all this said, which series is right for you? It depends on what the player’s preferences are. If there’s a player that loves games that are focused on primarily telling a story first, then it’s God of War. These games are hailed for their stories, writing, and characters. They also have some of the best voice acting and graphics in the business.

If the player prefers more in-depth action combat and gameplay, then it’s Devil May Cry. This has so many mechanics moves and abilities, that it can be quite overwhelming at first. Whatever game is picked, the player is bound to have a great time. Let it be known, that both game series are incredible, so you can’t go wrong with either one.
