Searching for quality is the name of the game when searching for the best Monster Hunter Stories eggs. With a new wave of players experiencing the game for the first time thanks to the recently released remaster, there may be some Riders who are a bit lost. It’s understandable to be confused or overwhelmed since the mechanics in the game are much different from the main line Monster Hunter games.
There’s no reason to fear though since I’m here to help you fill your team with the best of the best Monsties. This article is not a team-building guide containing the monsters I deem the strongest. Rather, it’s a simple egg guide to help you and your Felyne companion Navirou sniff out the winners among your favorite Monsties. Let’s get started.
Finding Monster Hunter Stories Eggs
Of course, the very first step in filling your team is finding the monster dens that the eggs reside in. They’re simple to spot given that they stand out among the different environments in the game. During the course of the game’s story, you will encounter two types of dens to loot from. Normal dens come in a variety of colors given the map you’re exploring or if they’re related to a quest. What you should be after are the rare dens. Those appear as a bright golden color that can easily be spotted.
While it’s still a good idea to loot the normal dens just to see what eggs are available, the rare dens give you a better chance at finding rarer eggs with better beginning stats. In my case, they even gave me some Monsties I couldn’t use at the time of hatching them because they appeared later in the game. With whatever den you choose to explore and loot, you better prepare for a possible fight. You’ll be encountering small monsters as well as large monsters, especially if you explore the nests within for too long.
How to Spot a Good Egg
When picking out your Monster Hunter Stories eggs, you can only take one egg from each nest you find. The number of eggs you can pick up and examine varies from nest to nest, but with each one, you will notice Navirou talking about its smell and weight. That’s not just him making rude comments about them. The smellier and heavier an egg is, the better it is likely to be for your team.
According to CAPCOM, eggs with a stronger smell are more likely to have a Monstie inside with rarer genes. When it comes to weight, heavier eggs mean that there is likely a strong monster inside. Having an egg that is both smelly and heavy is usually a great grab and might just be a wonderful addition to your team. At the beginning of the game, your chances of finding these eggs are a bit slim, but it’s best to keep riding along. You never know when you’ll find an amazing future team member.
All About Egg Patterns
Monster Hunter Stories eggs come in a wide variety of patterns and color combinations. With an experienced eye, you’ll know what each egg contains. I won’t tell you what each egg looks like for each monster in this egg guide. I will, however, give you a description of the patterns for the 11 categories of Monsties in the game.
Amphibian: These eggs have thick horizontal lines throughout the shell. There is only one Amphibian Monstie in the game.
Bird Wyvern: These eggs have a pattern consisting of small and large shapes similar to paint splotches.
Brute Wyvern: These eggs have shapes that look like lightning bolts going across the shell.
Elder Dragon: These eggs have a complex pattern of thin and thick lines with a large star shape in the middle.
Fanged Beast: These eggs look like their covered in a spiky pattern that resembles miniature explosions.
Fanged Wyvern: These eggs have a lightning bolt pattern that is more vertical.
Flying Wyvern: These eggs look like they are covered in tiger stripes.
Herbivore: These eggs have thick horizontal oblong shapes that go around the shell.
Leviathan: These eggs have a downward wavy pattern that covers the entire shell.
Piscine Wyvern: These eggs have small and large polka dots. There is only one Piscine Wyvern in the game.
Temnoceran: These eggs resemble watermelons with curved lines that meet on the top and bottom.
The Hunt for Egg Fragments
Looting endless numbers of dens isn’t the only way to fill your team with beloved Monsties. No Monster Hunter Stories egg guide would be complete without at least mentioning egg fragments. Like the name suggests, these are fragments from the different categories of eggs found in the game. After collect nine fragments that fit together, you will be able to hatch a Monstie. I’m not sure how that works, but in a world where a wingless mud monster can be deemed a wyvern, sometimes it’s best not to ask questions.
When putting together what is essentially a puzzle and a game of bingo combined, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. The type of fragments you use will heighten the chance of you getting a specific category of Monstie. The color of the fragments matters as well. The colors red, blue, and green correspond to extra points to a Monstie’s attack, defense, and health. Matching three of the same color will earn you points for the respective stat. Having matches like that will get you no points at all.
The easiest way to obtain these fragments is to hunt them down within bone piles. Specifically, you’ll want to look out for piles with a reddish hue to them. The chance for them to drop fragments isn’t 100%, but you’ll eventually get the fragments you’re looking for. While playing the game myself, I’ve found that the desert area has a good amount of those piles. Just like with rare dens and quality eggs, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled if you want to use fragments to bring out the true potential of your team.
