Don’t! Fret: The Audition is one of the latest mascot horror games to grace the sub-genre. The indie horror game is being developed by Antic Games LLC and Scary Kid Studio. The free demo offers a glimpse into the world that the hardworking people involved with it are building. It also puts a nice and refreshing spin on mascot horror with a stylized and artistic world built around it. It’s a nice introduction to what the full story will have to offer.
A World Full Of Musical Scares
As the trailers and the cover art for the game already suggest, Don’t! Fret is a mascot horror game with music heavily mixed into the story. The fact that the main character, Fret, takes the form of an anthropomorphic guitar also helps make this clear. The story takes place in a fantastical boarding school for the musically inclined called Harmonic Heights. While the school may sound wonderful, there are dark secrets hidden within and many scares to be seen. This includes but is not limited to mysterious disappearances, monsters lurking within the vents, and music teachers who have monstrous meltdowns.
As with many mascot horror games, players must explore a dilapidated building and solve an array of puzzles in hopes of making it out alive. Although the gameplay is simplistic, the environments created for Don’t! Fret are as whimsical as they are dark. The artists on the team have clearly taken great care to create a school that has a balance between wacky and weird. The screaming that can be heard in the events at times also helps add to the ambiance as players explore the halls.
A Horror Story With A Deep Meaning
Even though only glimpses are shown within Don’t! Fret: The Audition, this already dark game seems to explore deeper, realistic themes. At the very beginning of the demo, we are introduced to a pair of two feuding parents. Those parents have a child called Fret just like the guitar character players take the role of. The mother of this child wants to hide him from his father, who is impatient to get the boy somewhere before they’re both late. Theories are already being spun around Don’t! Fret. One of the most popular ones is what players see in the main portion being the imagination of a troubled and overworked child.
Final Thoughts
Any theories will have to remain as such until the full game’s release. While there is not a solid announced date just yet, Don’t! Fret is expected to be released at some point in 2025. This musically inclined indie horror game is in good hands, especially when it comes to the music featured within. One of the studios involved with its development, Scary Kid Studios, was founded by one of the masterminds behind Rockit Music. For the not familiar, Rockit Music is a group that creates songs inspired by horror games and other oddities within pop culture. Of course, the group has already released the official song for the game. For fans of mascot horror, it’s worth the listen.
