Bethesda recently re-released the classic Doom titles, but it’s not like any previous ports that the gaming community has received so far. The bundle known as Doom+Doom II, is a compilation of the first two classic games along with official episodes, unofficial episodes, mod supported content, and a brand new official episode made specifically for this bundle. Many new features were added along with the release of this bundle, here’s what is new with the classical 16 bit era of the Doom series.
Blast from the past
The 1993 original has been a beloved game for the last couple of decades since its initial release. In recent times, there’s been many internet memes where people can somehow play the game on random electronics, ranging from a treadmill to a school calculator. That’s how much of an impact the classic had on the community of gamers. Bethesda and id Software, fully aware of the game’s popularity, decided to make many ports for various consoles and their later generations, with this bundle being the latest. Doom+Doom II is available for Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox One & Series X/S along with their game pass subscription, PlayStation 4 & 5, and lastly, Nintendo Switch.
A breath of fresh air
This bundle offers many new aspects that wasn’t either originally present or not well implemented in the Xbox One/PS4 ports of the classic titles, The first of which is the option for either full online co-op or multiplayer deathmatch across the entire catalog of available maps and campaign episodes. No more local only multiplayer or co-op, you can play with whoever you want with ease. The game has been set to run at 1080p and 60 FPS by default for all platforms, with the possibility of running at 4K quality and 120 FPS for hardware that supports it. Lastly, an entire remix composition of the original soundtrack by Andrew Hullshult.
Doom’s legacy lives on
id Software went all in for the legacy of Doom, this re-release includes all official releases of the classic titles and their sequeal episodes, and a new episode. Doom (1993), Doom II, Master Levels of Doom II, which is a compilation of some of best fan made levels made by the gaming community. TNT: Evulution, The Plutonia Experiment, the first official sequal episode for Doom II; No Rest for the Living. Sigil, an unofficial sequel episode for Doom II created by John Romero and the Doom community for anniversary of Doom in 2019. Last but certainly not least, Legacy of Rust, a brand new sequel episode.
Legacy of Rust was made in collaboration between id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames. This episode takes place in a new place, where the player must reclaim a lost UAC Base that has fallen to a demonic invasion. This episode not only brings back everything that makes the classics great, but also introduces a new cast of demons and weapons in this episode. It’s certainly looking to be the most passionate project id Software has made yet.
Departing Thoughts
Doom+Doom II is by far, one of the best re-releases of classic Doom to ever be released. This bundle should set a new standard for how re-releases should be handled: bring back everything that makes it so great, make some quality of life changes to the software, and even add something new to make it fresh. This bundle is available for digital purchase on the aforementioned platforms as well as being recently added to the Xbox Game Pass library. Those who have already purchased previous ports of Doom will receive the bundle for free, for those who have not, the game currently costs 10 dollars, it’s time to take the demonic horde head on and send them back where they came from.
