Dr. Disrespect Returns July 31 After Controversy

A little over a month ago, renowned Twitch streamer “Dr. Disrespect” spoke out about why he was banned from the famous streaming platform four years ago. The 42-year-old confirmed the allegations of him speaking inappropriately to a 16-year-old through Twitch Whispers. After weeks of lying low, Dr. Disrespect has returned to the Internet with an announcement post on X. The revival of Doc has left the Internet torn as many former fans have already distanced themselves from him. On the contrary, a group of die-hard fans still support Dr. Disrespect. His (dwindling) support and the recent allegations against other popular creators have allowed Dr. Disrespect to work his way back into the public eye.

It Didn’t Start This Way

One of the most infamous streamers on Twitch, Dr. Disrespect was once beloved by fans worldwide. Herschel “Guy” Beahm IV, also known as the Doc, earned a degree in Marketing Management at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona before his Twitch career began. His hobbies consisted of playing video games and sports- particularly basketball due to his staggering height of 6 ft 8 inches. In college, his video game of choice was the Halo series, and Doc even garnered popularity within the game’s fanbase due to his trash-talking in the game’s proximity chat. He was known in the community by the username “Diarrhea Panic” and soon became iconic in the Halo sphere for his outlandish personality.

On January 11, 2010, Dr. Disrespect started on YouTube with a Call Of Duty II: Modern Warfare gameplay video. His signature wig, mustache, and body armor accentuated his extroverted personality. Doc instantly became an internet sensation, and the success of his first video led to a collaboration with Machinima. They were one of the most popular gaming channels at the time and helped him just like he helped them.

In 2011, he picked up a job at Sledgehammer Games as the community manager, and in 2014 he was promoted to a level designer for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout. Just one year later, Dr. Disrespect would quit his job at Sledgehammer Games in favor of streaming on Twitch full-time. He gained massive popularity streaming various battle royale games like H1Z1, PubG, and the Call Of Duty franchise, garnering millions of supporters.

Allegations Arise Against Dr. Disrespect

In 2020, Dr. Disrespect was unexpectedly banned from Twitch permanently. He was also removed from Discord’s partnership program. Neither platform released the details on why the massive creator was removed from their sites. For years, the only information released about the ban was that Doc had violated terms and conditions. During that time, Dr. Disrespect shifted his fanbase to YouTube, where he continued streaming as normal for a couple of years.

Kick, a different streaming platform that is notorious for hosting controversial streamers,  offered $10 million to switch to their site. However, he turned it down, claiming he would need at least $50 million to move. He explained that his channel was doing well on YouTube and gaining popularity every day, but that the offer from Kick was “humbling” and “appreciated” despite his refusal to accept.

As it turns out, Dr. Disrespect’s removal from Twitch and subsequent other platforms was due to him inappropriately contacting a minor through Twitch Whispers. A former Twitch employee tweeted about the incident in June, but Dr. Disrespect could not respond due to legal reasons. Further information was released stating that he had sent these messages to an underage girl, and they had even planned on meeting in person at Twitchcon. When Doc was finally allowed to speak out on the controversy, he admitted these allegations were true. He then took a month-long break from streaming after stating he felt “burnt out”.

Controversial Return Sparks Discussions

Dr. Disrespect then returned with a post on X/Twitter. It consists of a single image of him playing Chess, while the viewer plays Checkers. This implies that Dr. Disrespect believes he is playing an intelligent game, and everyone else is not. A handful of people can be found in the comments of this post defending him. Most comments, however, express negative sentiments towards the creator.

Ten years ago, the Internet was a vastly different place. Regardless of political views, when someone was outed as acting inappropriately with minors online, everyone would collectively outcast that person. There was no chance at redemption or a comeback. This may not be the case anymore. It is needless to say an adult inappropriately messaging a minor and planning to meet with them is illegal. If charges were to be pressed against Dr. Disrespect, he could very well face hefty fines and years of prison time. Many of his sponsors have ended contracts with him due to the controversy.
