With more and more updates pouring in about BioWare’s upcoming game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, many fans have been waiting to hear how the Inquisitor will be involved. Given the nature of the possible outcomes of the Trespasser DLC, and the lingering desire to see a true conclusion to the Solas romance, the latest news finally gives players some answers to the years of speculation that has haunted the Dragon Age fandom for a decade.
Role
John Epler (Creative Director) and Corinne Busche (Lead Game Director) have each gone on record to relinquish a few tidbits of information ahead of the game release. Some of the details they have confirmed are that the Inquisitor will have a major role in the new game and will make an appearance during the narrative -though they did not go as far as to clarify how often players will see their Inquisitors, or what they will be doing.
When discussing the Inquisitor more broadly, Busche explained that:
“Bringing the Inquisitor into The Veilguard was simultaneously one of the most challenging and, I think, one of the most rewarding things we’ve done. The reason I say ‘challenging’ is because Dragon Age: The Veilguard is now about 10 years on from the events of Inquisition and Dragon Age: Trespasser, and even still, the fanbase has such an affinity towards their Inquisitors, the fan art, their stories. There is a certain reverence there about the Inquisitor that was very important for us to capture.” – IGN
Trespasser’s Influence
The developers have also confirmed that players will not be able to take control of their Inquisitors and that the character creator for Veilguard will be limited. Unlike the plethora of choices available in the Dragon Age Keep, utilized for Dragon Age: Inquisition, only three choices will be available to import into the game’s world state. And all, from the Trespasser DLC. Who the player romanced, whether the player disbanded the Inquisition or not, and whether or not the player chose to stop or save Solas, will be the only decisions applicable to the storyline.
Speculation
While fans have spent the last ten years speculating about the next installment of the Dragon Age franchise, these new details have not stopped the inundation of rumors, concerns, and assertions made by interested players. With this new information about the Inquisitor: paired with the screenshot pictured above, more questions have bubbled up to the surface -rather than been answered. The controversy and wild speculation have mainly been sparked by how the female Elf Inquisitor looks.
From the naked eye, most fans won’t notice the glaring changes that stand out like both a beacon and a warning sign to all the players who romanced Solas. The point of contention, which has the fan base up in arms, is that the Elven Inquisitor pictured does not have a Vallaslin. Given the fact that the only way for the Inquisitor to lose their Vallaslin in Dragon Age: Inquisition is by romancing Solas, fans are speculating that their romance could be canon -meaning that the default world-state for Veilguard is a Solas/Lavellan romance. If true, the implications would be far-reaching: as said pairing remains one of the most popular romances in Bioware history.
But whether or not that is Bioware’s intentions, or that it’s even true, is anyone’s guess. Until the game’s release on October 31, 2024, fans will have to wait for that confirmation. Until then, players interested in Dragon Age: the Veilguard can pre-order their copies now: either digitally on Steam, the EA app, or via Epic Games; or physically at local and online retailers. Dragon Age: the Veilguard is rated M -for mature.
