With Dragon Age the Veilguard set to release at noon, EST, on October 31, players are clamoring for more information on the game to better prepare for their first playthrough. Including but not limited to the game’s narrative, mechanics, combat, and the intricacies that players will have to navigate. As more and more full-game reviews trickle out: information about the inner workings of the game’s character creator, armor specifics, HUD settings, faction dynamics, and more, have come to light; giving players insight on what exactly to expect and advice on how to play effectively.

Character Creator

Many of the offered tips revolve around Dragon Age the Veilguard’s Character Creator and focus not only on Rook but also on the importance of the Inquisitor’s overall look. Specifically, they warn that players should spend a great amount of time perfecting their Inquisitor, prioritizing their look over Rook’s, as once the game begins no changes can be made to their appearance. The opposite is also true for Rook, as post-character-creator, their look; facial features, hair, height, and body type; can all be readjusted (or remade) via the Mirror of Transformation, found in the party’s home base called the Lighthouse.

Additional information about the Character Creator reveals that the facial presets the players choose, to morph their character’s look, will make or break Rook’s look. They will delineate and compartmentalize the aspects players can choose via sliders. All sliders meant to adjust each component of Rook’s visage will be restricted by which primary facial presets the player chooses. The head shape will determine this range, as well as the body proportions -which can affect how bulky armor will look on the character.

HUD Settings

Dragon Age the Veilguard’s intricate settings menus allow players to fully customize their playing experience throughout the game’s runtime. Settings for nudity, and additional sound settings, will allow players who intend to stream to toggle off the more risqué visuals and sounds that may put compliance with TOS at risk. The nudity setting can be adjusted in two separate sections of the game’s settings: regarding casual wear specifically and overall general settings.

Many of the game’s default UI settings can be adjusted as well. Mechanics, like Object Tracker Visibility, are set to be active by default, but players can toggle them off at any time. Players can also pick through and choose which individual indicators they want to stay on screen. The map, abilities, health bars, and more can be toggled off and on. This allows players an uninterrupted view of the world of Thedas without all the clutter and allows them to utilize the game’s Photo Mode -which is only accessible via the main menu by hitting the escape key.

Armor Details

One of the more exciting tips for Dragon Age the Veilguard is the reveal that Rook will not be pigeon-holed into armor specifics. While the armor bonuses may or may not be conducive to a particular Rook’s class build, they will not be restricted by the quintessential assumption of who can wear light, medium, or heavy armor, based solely on typical class restrictions. Faction-specific armors will also not see any restrictions and can be worn by any Rook, at any time.

Worn interchangeably, the armor’s aesthetics can be changed via the game’s Transmog system -referred to as glamor– but does come with a few limitations. The game will warn players that, should they attempt to Transmog a piece of gear to look like casual wear, the choice may result in some visual clipping. To glamor any particular piece of gear, players will need to seek out their Wardrobe, located in Rook’s private quarters within the Lighthouse.

Faction Vendors

Inherent to the overall game of Dragon Age the Veilguard, factions, and their vendors have been deemed one of the most important mechanics for players to focus on. Depending on the player’s reputation level, faction vendors will offer specific pieces of gear tied to how much approval the player has amassed. The higher the level, the stronger the weapons and armor. Therefore, players should prioritize gaining a faction’s reputation above all other dynamics in the game. Access to said gains, and vendors, will eventually become limited the further the player progresses through the storyline.

Regarding a crafting system, the newest addition to the Dragon Age franchise has omitted this particular aspect from previous games. Similar to how the players must increase their reputation with faction vendors, they must also increase their ratings with the game’s official vendor for the Veilguard, The Caretaker. To do so, players will collect different materials across the different locations in Thedas, and turn them in along with gold, to upgrade the Caretaker’s crafting level. The gear offered by the Caretaker can be upgraded to legendary status, gaining even more additional stats.

Inventory

Valuables are solely within the game for players to accumulate money. They can be sold to Faction Vendors for both gold and to increase faction reputation. There is no inventory management system, so players will not need to manage their carrying capacity or a restrictive number of available slots within their pack. Additionally, breaking any boxes or pots found in the world will result in more items for Rook to sell. Boxes will have some loot, Green Pots will drop health potions, while Blue Pots will increase Rooks Ultimate meter.
