A new teaser for the fourth installment in the Dragon Ball universe’s highly regarded Budokai Tenkaichi series has arrived. On September 19, 2024, the official Bandai Namco Entertainment U.S. YouTube channel dropped a 5-minute trailer debuting all new characters added to Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. The next-generation graphics are a true joy to witness and bring back memories of the older games in the Dragon Ball catalog. One of the new faces features Son Goku in a way many anime fans may not have seen before.
Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero’s DB Super Cast
Since its premiere back in January 2017, fans have been vocal about how much they enjoy the new series Dragon Ball Super. The film that preceded the series’ release, Battle of Gods, offered not only new transformations for the Z Fighters, including the iconic Super Saiyan God forms of Goku and Vegeta, but also humbling moments for Goku and Vegeta. Beerus and his master Whis were welcome additions to the list of characters as they provided fun and charm.
At any rate, here are all the Dragon Ball Super characters and transformations that fans can button mash with to pull off long combos and terrain-destroying moves:
- Android 17 (DB Super Park Ranger Attire)
- Broly (Dragon Ball Super Attire)
- Super Saiyan Broly (DB Super Attire)
- Super Saiyan Broly – Full Power (DB Super Attire)
- Frieza (DB Super Attire)
- Gogeta (a fusion between Goku and Vegeta)
- Super Saiyan Gogeta
- Super Saiyan God Gogeta
- Goku (DB Super Attire)
- Super Saiyan Goku (DB Super Attire)
- Super Saiyan God Goku
- Ultra Instinct Goku
- Vegeta (Dragon Ball Super Attire)
- Super Saiyan Vegeta (Dragon Ball Super Attire)
- Super Saiyan God Vegeta
Sparking Zero’s GT Cast
The highly-anticipated fourth entry in the Budokai Tenkaichi franchise is almost here. On September 19, Bandai Namco released a new teaser trailer showcasing the new characters that Dragon Ball fans can play as in the cross-platform title. This will mark the first Dragon Ball video game made without creator Akira Toriyama around to see it released as the groundbreaking late legend passed from a subdural hematoma in March 2024.
According to a report by Kotaku, we now know that 182 characters will be playable in the awaited Budokai Tenkaichi follow-up. For fans keeping track at home, that’s 21 more fighters than the character list in Budokai Tenkaichi 3 which was already stacked at 161 playable fighters. Dragon Ball GT, you will be able to play as any of the following characters:
- Adult Son Goku (in GT)
- Vegeta (Possessed by the parasitic tuffle Baby)
- Goku – Super Saiyan (GT)
- Goku – Super Saiyan 3 (GT)
- Goku – Super Saiyan 4 (GT)
- Great Ape – Baby
- Majuub (Fusion of Majin Buu and Kid Buu reincarnated as a human, Uub)
- The shadow dragon Omega Shenron
- Gohan and his wife Videl’s daughter, Pan
- Super Baby Vegeta 1
- Super Baby Vegeta 2
- Uub
Sparking Zero Debuts a Teenage Goku
The Dragon Ball games typically feature teenage characters that many have come to expect. Teen Gohan, Trunks, and Androids 17 and 18 are the most frequently appearing in a fair share of titles, including the Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi series. Introducing a teenage Goku is something new that the prior titles have not delved into.
Although the idea on paper sounded appealing, the early gameplay of teenage Goku looks just like his character as a kid with his ape tail cut off. His move set appears to be the same as well which is a bit of a letdown. It’s possible throughout the game that teen Goku can surprise fans with a wider array of combos and energy waves to make his inclusion in the franchise worth it.
Final Thoughts
As a longtime fan of the anime and franchise, it feels thrilling to see another entry in the long-running line of Dragon Ball games. While I’ve preferred the minimalistic approach to titles in the past including Budokai 3 and Infinite World, it does feel like you’re playing the anime when you can fully move around the environment and toss your opponent into the nearest building. Sparking Zero looks to be another solid title with more than enough characters to hold interest for multiple playthroughs.
