GenG fails to succeed at Worlds 2025

Worlds 2025: GenG Esports Fail to Succeed

Another year of GenG Esports’ dominance has passed without a Worlds title. For the majority of the year, GenG was the best team in the world, but in the final moments, they failed. Does their loss automatically dub their year a failure, or does winning Worlds carry too much weight? For many fans, GenG and especially Chovy can not enter the best in the world argument until they lift the Summoner’s Cup.

Worlds 2025: GenG Esports Player Review

Kiin

Total Apex rating – 6.8 (tied 1st among top laners, tied 8th among players)

Champions Played

  • Sion (3)
  • Aatrox (2)
  • Ambessa (2)
  • K’Sante (2)
  • Gwen
  • Ornn
  • Rek’Sai
  • Yorick

Kiin was consistently the best top laner for Worlds up until game three against KT Rolster. He performed heroics on Sion in that series to keep GenG. However, it was not enough. Then, for the final two games, he was non-existent on carry champions, by far his worst of the tournament. He remains tied for first in the rankings for top laners, demonstrating his dominance. His K’Sante is still by far the best in the world.

Canyon

Total Apex rating – 6.2 (tied 6th among junglers, tied 29th among players

Champions Played

  • Xin Zhao (3)
  • Jarvan IV (2)
  • Skarner (2)
  • Vi (2)
  • Wukong (2)
  • Nidalee
  • Pantheon

Canyon’s opening to Worlds reawakened the Polar Bear. He had struggled during the LCK, but his form returned. He proved to everyone why he is feared. Bringing out his Nidalee in game four against Hanwha Life was classic Canyon. However, in the KT series, he faltered once more, being unable to match the impact of Cuzz.

Chovy

Total Apex rating – 6.8 (3rd amongst mid laners, tied 8th among players)

Champions Played

  • Orianna (3)
  • Galio (2)
  • Ryze (2)
  • Taliyah (2)
  • Anivia
  • Hwei
  • Viktor
  • Yone

The best player outside of Worlds in the past years has been Chovy. He always manages to warp games around him. He’s almost always ahead in farm, while contributing to fights. But whenever the pressure is on at Worlds, he stumbles. The series this year was against KT. He seemed shaky to start, but still held his own in the first two games. In the third, he unraveled. Failing to flash an Azir Shuffle and dying solo to Bdd are unlike Chovy. He is still one of the greatest players in the world, even without lifting the Summoner’s Cup.

Ruler

Total Apex rating – 6.8 (3rd among bot laners, tied 8th among players)

Champions Played

  • Kai’Sa (3)
  • Lucian (3)
  • Corki (2)
  • Ezreal (2)
  • Sivir
  • Varus
  • Yunara

Ruler had a consistently strong tournament. He was not always the flashiest, but he was consistent enough to overcome most players. You could potentially blame him for his ultimate against Anyone’s Legend, but that would be nitpicking. However, in the pivotal KT series, he was often outplayed by deokdam. His Lucian game in particular had more mistakes than we are accustomed to with Ruler.

Duro

Total Apex rating – 6.9 (1st among supports, tied 5th among players)

Champions Played

  • Braum (3)
  • Alistar (2)
  • Nautilus (2)
  • Rakan (2)
  • Bard
  • Leona
  • Neeko
  • Poppy

The best-rated player on GenG at the tournament. He had a magnificent year. While he started shaky, once Duro grew into the team, he took over. During the LCK Regular Season, he outperformed his teammates. At times, he was better than Keria. Worlds were no different. He was excellent against T1 and maintained his level until the KT series. His trigger pull in game four on Braum may have cost GenG the series. But that is one mistake in an overall dominant tournament.

GenG Esports Team Review

Even when GenG loses at Worlds, there are positives to take away. Worlds 2025 is no different. Until the series against KT, they were the favourites. They had defeated HLE and avoided T1 and AL. However, the loss to KT has dampened this year’s dominance. They were the best team for the majority of the year. All the players on the roster could be considered the best in their roles. But when it came to the pivotal series, they faltered, a story we have seen too many times. Will they rectify it in 2026?
