This prompted an influx of even more intense excitement within the fanbase that had been patiently waiting for ten years.
Reviews
Between major Dragon Age content creators and big names in the gaming news industry, Dragon Age the Veilguard has accumulated numerous positive ratings and recommendations. Outlets like IGN and Eurogamer have deemed Bioware’s new game one of the best new games of the year, giving it a rating of 9/10 and Five stars, respectively. Game Rant even went so far as to declare Dragon Age the Veilguard a “contender for Game of the Year,” with a rating of 10/10. All the while: Veilguard’s average reviewer score on Metacritic has steadily remained within the range of 83-84 overall.
EA’s Highest Praise
Electronic Arts Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wilson spoke on the legacy of Bioware and the Dragon Age franchise at a recent quarterly earnings call Q&A. During the call, Wilson lamented the failures of Bioware’s more recent release, Anthem, by saying that “probably the one people remember the most for not really living up to the expectations of what a ‘BioWare game’ should be”. Adding, additionally, that the developer “do something very, very different” but that Anthem just didn’t land well as Bioware intended.
However, when speaking directly to investors solely on Dragon Age the Veilguard, Wilson’s praise for the new game was readily apparent:
“The BioWare team has really rallied around what made BioWare a fan-favorite studio and a fan-favorite brand and the types of games they make; incredibly rich worlds, incredibly nuanced characters, really powerful and compelling stories with camaraderie and friendships and relationships, and decisions that matter in the context of gameplay,” Wilson said. “And I think it’s been that return to what made BioWare great and giving the studio the time to deliver against what makes BioWare great in the context of the Dragon Age world is what amounts to a game like Dragon Age: The Veilguard.”
Skepticism
However, many fans have dismissed CEO Wilson’s comments as far too biased to be seen as genuine. The financial ramifications of Veilguard’s needed success, to lift an already struggling subsidiary of EA and revitalize both Bioware’s and Electronic Arts’ image, are the main reasons players and fans of the franchise are taking his comments with a grain of salt. Arguing that such high praise feels like a blatant attempt to inflate the game’s reputation -solely for financial gain, and not because Wilson truly believes in the property’s deserved success.
