Echoes of Wisdom: A Great Zelda Mashup

The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom

The newest trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom was very revealing. In addition to key gameplay info, it showed off much of the setting. Fans of the franchise are constantly wondering about each new game’s place in the timeline. While we have no definitive answers, the new footage is quite curious. It shows elements from several past Zelda games, mixing things that haven’t been combined before. Let’s look at how Echoes of Wisdom is handling its references.

Regional Names

First introduced in Twilight Princess, Echoes of Wisdom reuses recurring regional names. The Eldin Volcano is named after the Goddess of Power Din, one of three goddesses. Another Goddess, Farore, is used for the Faron region. These two regional names were both reused in Breath of the Wild and its sequel. They are commonly associated with Gorons and forests, respectively, which continues here. Curiously, the Zora area is named Jabul, presumably after the great fishes Jabu Jabu and Jabun. In past games, it would’ve been the Lanayru province, but this game seems to take a different direction. We’ll have to see if other geography gets pulled from the franchise’s history.

Speaking of Zora

Sea Zora and River Zora will meet for the first time in the Zelda series during this game. The River Zora’s design dates back to the original Zelda game. The more recognized Sea Zora design was first seen in Ocarina of Time. However, we’ve seen them combined in one setting. Of course, this is very interesting timeline-wise. While nothing in the timeline would prevent this, it’s heretofore unprecedented. The story dives into a conflict between the two varieties, which is a fun twist. We’ll have to see if any older Zora lore gets referenced. Characters like Ruto are referenced in most stories about Zora, so this game could as well.

A Blend of Styles

Echoes of Wisdom has drawn much inspiration from all areas of the Zelda franchise. In this trailer, we see a menu system similar to the Breath of the Wild games. The Gerudo seem to also draw inspiration from those games. We see the return of Deku Scrubs as a friendly society, last seen in the Four Swords subseries. Zelda’s design resembles her look from A Link to the Past and its sequel. Nintendo is bringing back a variety of elements we haven’t seen mixed together. Hopefully, by bringing them all together, we will see a new kind of story. Echoes of Wisdom could be a new kind of game that calls to all eras of the series.
