The Zelda movie is coming eventually. So is The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Of course, the latter will be out much sooner since it already has a release date and a trailer has been confirmed. Even though the game is still months away, it’s likely a completed project. The film, however, is far from it. It’s been announced, and some of the crew (Wes Ball directing, Derek Connelly writing, Shigeru Miyamoto producing) has been confirmed. That’s it, though. But one thing is true, they are probably the next two projects from this iconic franchise. Might they be connected?
Will Echoes of Wisdom Connect to Zelda Movie?
It is unlikely that the Zelda movie, which is currently just untitled The Legend of Zelda film, is related to Echoes of Wisdom. The release dates are just too far apart. There may undoubtedly be some cross-promotion, but it is very likely that the movie won’t come out for another three years. It’s still in pre-production, so it needs to be written, filmed, edited, and then released. All of that takes a lot of time. There likely won’t be another mainline video game between Echoes of Wisdom and the movie’s release, which is why they could be connected, but it’s not likely.
No plot details have been revealed for the movie, and the information surrounding the game’s story is only slightly less sparse. Players know that this time, Link is captured by a rift and Zelda must save him and Hyrule. That alone also makes it slightly less likely that this game is the story inspiration for the movie. Plus, director Wes Ball previously said he wouldn’t reveal what his favorite game was but that he had ideas on what the movie would be like. That was well before the latest Zelda game was even announced.
For more evidence that this is likely not what Nintendo is going to do, look no further than The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That movie came out roughly seven months before a big game release: Super Mario Bros. Wonder. They had nothing to do with each other. The Mario movie actually gives a lot of potential insight into what the Zelda movie might be like since it was Nintendo’s first big foray into films.
What Game Could Serve as Plot for the Zelda Movie?
Even if it’s not Echoes of Wisdom, there are still so many iconic games in The Legend of Zelda that could make for good movies. Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild, Twilight Princess, Link’s Awakening, A Link to the Past, and so many others might work. However, just like the Mario film, don’t expect untitled The Legend of Zelda film to follow any one story. In fact, it might have references to a lot of them, but it likely won’t follow any plots that gamers have experienced.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, again the best inspiration for what a Zelda film might be like, made everything completely unique to the movie. The story was unique, the characters were, too, and while there were Easter eggs, no one who’d played any of the games knew where it was going. The Zelda movie will presumably be the same way. There will be references to those aforementioned games and more, and possibly Echoes of Wisdom, but they won’t serve as the story for what should be its own experience whenever it comes out.
