Echoes of Wisdom Dominates Japan with Over 200,000 Units Sold

Echoes of Wisdom

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is one of the most popular games out right now. Nintendo is virtually a money-printing company, as anything they do usually sells well. The same is true for The Legend of Zelda franchise at large, as it has three of the top 50 games sold for Nintendo all-time, which includes every single game they’ve ever released. In just a brief amount of time, it looks like Echoes of Wisdom could be on its way to joining that list.

Echoes of Wisdom Sells Like Hotcakes in Japan

In Japan, people are buying Echoes of Wisdom with haste. According to the tally done by Famitsu, the new Zelda game sold 200,121 units to open. The data was collected from September 23 to September 29, with the game coming out on September 26. In just three days of wide release, over 200,000 gamers in Japan picked up a copy. That was far and away the most dominant game of the week in the country. Here’s the rest of the list:

  • Echoes of Wisdom, 200,121 units
  • The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki PS5, 29,554
  • The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki PS4, 17,838
  • EA Sports FC 25 Switch, 13,332
  • EA Sports FC 25 PS5, 13,265
  • Astro Bot PS5, 6,381

Put simply, hardly anyone was buying the other games available this week. Even Astro Bot, a top contender for Game of the Year, didn’t sell in comparison. Neither did EA Sports FC 25, and sports games are typically quite popular. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Japan is the home of Nintendo, so there’s perhaps a little bit of bias there. Either way, it was easily the best-selling video game in Japan and it wasn’t close. Worldwide numbers have not been released yet, but the game is likely dominating most places as well.

Zelda Boosts Console Sales in Japan

Echoes of Wisdom didn’t just sell copies of the game, it also might have propped up console sales as well. In Japan, the Switch Lite sold 34,924 times during the aforementioned time frame. The Switch OLED sold 34,464 times. Even the standard Switch sold over 8,000 times. The console and its variations took up three of the top four spots in the Japanese sales numbers. Again, Japan is the home of these consoles, but still.

There was a special Zelda Switch Lite released with the game, which has the Tri-Force on it and is golden. The Switch Lite has had a few different color schemes,  but this is one of the few themed ones. Nintendo has special editions of the regular and OLED Switch, such as Tears of the KingdomSuper Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 3, Monster Hunter Rise, Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu, and many more.

In Conclusion

So far, so good for Nintendo. The release of Echoes of Wisdom may not be taking the world by storm quite like Tears of the Kingdom did last year, but that was heralded as one of the best games of all time. Nevertheless, the gaming titan seems to have another smash hit on its hands. At the very least, it is running circles around the competition in Japan.
